Katie was greeted by a nurse who happened to be a Bajoran almost the moment she stepped into Sickbay. It had been years since she had been in this sickbay. There was a strong resemblance to the ones on other ships but there were elements that were markedly different.

“May I assist you?” the nurse asked.

Katie handed her PADD to the nurse and smiled.

“Standard procedure, if I recall correctly, is to visit the Chief Medical Officer… or his designated alternate, when first arriving,” Katie said.

“That is correct,” the nurse said returning the PADD. “You may wait here. Dr. Spenn will be with you shortly.”

“Spenn. He… she?… is a Vulcan?”

“He is a Vulcan,” the nurse replied as she turned. “Now, if you will excuse me, I have others to attend to.”

“Thank you, Nurse,” Katie said. She found a chair and sat. A vague smile creeped onto her face. “A Vulcan doctor. He probably has a charming bedside manner. I wonder if he will tell me the odds of my having a terminal case of fatique.”

Nurse Navis told Spenn about the lieutenant near biobed 4. He promptly made his way over. “Greetings,” He said to the sitting lieut flatly, “Are you Lieutenant Junior Grade Katherine Hobbes?”

Katie rose to her feet when the physician addressed her.

“That would be me,” she said. She favored the doctor with a faint smile. “I am here for my standard boarding examination. I have been told that Dr. Spenn is a Vulcan. It seems safe to assume that is you.”

Katie handed the PADD with her assignment orders.

“Things have not changed much since the last I was here,” she said as the doctor looked at the PADD. “Per usual I am talking too much. Where do we begin?”

“We can begin by you taking a seat on the biobed,” Spenn stated blankly, gesturing to a nearby biobed, “Tell me, Lieutenant, do you have any ailments or any medical condition that would impede your duties on this starship?”

Katie nodded to the Vulcan physician who was, in fact, the tallest Vulcan she had ever met. He was much taller than her friend T’Lera. After she hopped up onto the biobed, Lt Spenn was still taller than she was but the difference was much less noticeable.

“None that I am aware of,” Katie said favoring him with a smile. “I’m not sleeping particularly well… Sleeping is not exactly a “duty” is it?”

“Sleep is not a duty, Lieutenant,” Spenn confirmed, “And a lack of sleep can adversely affect your performance on this starship. Have you seen a doctor about your sleeping trouble?”

“Um. No,” Katie said. “I’ve learned to adapt. I have always slept on my back… I can’t even remember the last time I could sleep on my stomach. If I try sleeping on my side, I develop a pain in my left side.”

Katie touched her left side just a bit above where her elbow would strike it.

“These days I sleep in what amounts to a sitting position… three pillows to keep my head propped up. Then there is no problem. “

She stopped talking for a moment and frowned.

“Do you think there’s a problem?” she asked.
