The captain’s ready room was quiet save for the low, familiar hum of the ship’s systems, a sound that had long since become second nature. Soft starlight filtered through the viewport as the USS Ark Angel maintained a steady course, her engines working with practiced precision.

The captain stood at the desk, reviewing reports projected in clean, ordered layers of light. Crew duty rotations, departmental readiness updates, and long-range sensor summaries were examined one by one, each receiving the careful attention expected of the ship’s commanding officer. A few entries were flagged for follow-up, not out of concern, but out of habit; vigilance was part of the role.

Moving away from the desk, the captain paused at the viewport, observing the stars as they streamed past. Moments like these were rare opportunities for reflection. The weight of command rested constantly, even in silence, carried in the decisions already made and those yet to come.

Returning to the desk, the captain authorized routine orders, confirmed the ship’s operational status, and logged a brief personal note into the captain’s record. Everything aboard the Ark Angel was functioning within expected parameters, a quiet success often unnoticed but deeply valued.

With his tasks complete, the captain settled into his chair, posture composed and alert, eyes returning to the flowing stars beyond the viewport. The ship continued onward, ready for whatever awaited ahead, guided by steady leadership and an unbroken sense of duty.

The crewman had been wanting to check in with the commander since boarding, but he had been swept up with flight control and helm duties. He was a fine pilot, but his new role here on the Ark Angel would be as Yeoman. Sean made his way to Deck 1 and found the CO’s ready room, with the CO waiting.

When he was allowed entry, Sean entered and came to a salute. “Sir, Crewman Sean Moore belatedly reporting, sir.”

He smiled. “At ease I don’t need my Yeoman straining anything. Please have a seat. I heard you wanted to come in and see. What can I do you for?” Alex said with a smile. “Also, Sean no need to be formal in here.” He added.

“Thank you, sir.” Sean was not comfortable being quite so casual. That’d take him a while to become that comfortable. “I just wanted to check-in.” He sat down as offered.

“I did so with the helm department since I am doing some helm work for them,” continued the crewman. “But I thought it prudent to make sure the command staff didn’t have other tasks and duties for me.” He became a bit more relaxed as he soaked in the room, his normal smily face returning.

Becket sat there with a pondering thought going through his mind. “I do appreciate that you’ve taken the initiative to take Chief Helmsman as a temp, since, of course, our current Chief Helmsman is on leave on earth.” Alex had said to Sean. “I know most of the time it’s not necessarily for a Yeoman on board, but I know that you had nothing else to do around the ship. So, I took the initiative to appoint you as Captain’s Yeoman. However, I’m not so sure about the XO, who is on the away mission at Starbase 342. However, eventually, I know you’re not as busy. So I might give you some tasks; however, I actually have some right here.” Alex handed Sean a padd with some tasks. “I know it may look a lot, but it’s really not.” He added.

Sean was surprised as he took the padd. This was quite a list, but it was all manageable. While he was sitting at helm, he could bounce in between other tasks to assist the captain. “Of course, sir. Glad to help.”

The crewman shifted in his seat. “I met the new helm officer as well. They will be tackling the shuttlebays, which is where Lt Storm was focusing. So our external craft will be looked after well.”

Alex smiled. “I like to hear that. How is he doing anyway?” Alex asked.

“Eager beaver,” Sean replied, “as they say. Right up Storm’s alley, honestly.” Actually all flyers typically had the same personality, Sean included. “We all just want to get in an Armadillo and fly.” Moore liked flying the starships better, working with others on the bridge as needed to ensure the vessels kept moving. But there definitely was something to be said for piloting a tiny, agile shuttle…

He smiled as Sean said that. “I know that feeling. I was like that back at the academy. I was a bit of a fly boy too but I also did engineering courses. But I was and still am a fly boy. If you know what I mean.” He said with a bigger smile.

“I do, sir,” Moore replied. “In a way though, there is something to be said for the comfort of the belly of the ship.”

He glanced down at the padd. “Anything for which you have a priority? I know we’ll have our away team having some needs, but just want to busy myself with suitable tasks.”
