Wyatt Blackford straightened his uniform as he walked down the corridor toward the Chief of Security’s office. He was young—having turned nineteen only a few days earlier—but he had worked relentlessly to earn his place here, and he intended to prove that he belonged.

As he moved, he ran a hand through his dark brown hair. Two humans passed him in the corridor, whispering to one another. He told himself not to react. Stares were nothing new—he had been born with heterochromia, his left eye a vivid jade green and his right a clear blue—but ever since he was sixteen, his mind twisted those looks into something darker. A familiar paranoia crept in, the irrational fear that somehow they knew, that they could see the truth he kept so carefully hidden.

It was impossible, he reminded himself. Only a select few knew his secret: the captain, the Chief of Security, and the medical team. No one else had any reason—or right—to know. Still, the knowledge did little to calm his nerves.

He had come out at sixteen. His father, a stern and respected doctor, had responded with cold finality, disowning him and leaving him to survive on the streets. Those months had been brutal, shaping him in ways no academy ever could. Luck—or perhaps fate—had intervened when his uncle found him and took him in, offering shelter, support, and a path forward. With his help, Wyatt had made it into the Academy.

The early days had been rough. He struggled, fell behind, and worked twice as hard as everyone else just to keep up. But he refused to quit. In the end, he graduated—scarred, exhausted, and proud.

Now, standing outside the Chief of Security’s office, Wyatt stopped. He took a slow, steadying breath, trying to quiet his pounding heart. Straightening his shoulders, he lifted his hand and pressed the door chime, waiting to be called in.

Ensign Blackford, Security

OOC: I added your name there at the end of your post to keep ours separated. Great first post!

Ollie had been working slowly to get the security office all squared away, still being slightly new here himself, and he had finally gotten most things settled to his liking. Of course, he wasn’t sure if they would stay that way, he was sure he would learn more efficiency the longer he was in this position and would end up reorganizing a few times. His easy going nature also meant this place was not going to be a sterile museum.

He glanced up as he heard the chime and felt an unfamiliar presence outside the door. A smile came to his face as he felt the person steadying themselves: this must be one of the new officers joining the department. Keeping his smile firmly in place he wandered back behind his desk, smoothed out his uniform and readied himself for this first impression.

“Come in,” he called out.

Lieutenant Ezeami - COS

Wyatt heard the voice from inside call, “Come in.”
He stepped into the office and came to attention without hesitation.

He stood at about five-foot-eleven, a young man no older than nineteen. His short brown hair curled slightly at the ends, refusing to lie completely flat. What caught most people’s attention, however, were his eyes—his right a striking jade green, the left a cool, clear blue.

Anyone reading his file would note that while he hadn’t graduated at the very top of his class, his instructors consistently remarked on his sharp mind and ability to think quickly under pressure. The history and medical sections painted a harsher picture of his past. Born female, Wyatt had transitioned at sixteen, a decision that cost him his family. After coming out, he had been kicked out and forced to survive on the streets, working odd jobs just to get by.

Eventually, his uncle—a medical officer aboard a star ship—found him and took him in. It was his uncle who helped guide him toward the Academy and gave him a chance at a future he’d nearly lost. Though quiet and slow to trust, Wyatt was fiercely loyal to those who earned it.

“Sir,” he said clearly, his voice steady despite the weight of the moment.
“My name is Wyatt Blackford. I’m reporting for duty.”

Security Junior Officer

U.S.S. Ark Angel

“At ease, Ensign. Welcome aboard the Ark Angel. Please have a seat,” he gestured to one of the chairs sitting in front of his desk.

Oliver Ezeami was slightly shorter than the ensign and several years his senior. His eyes were the exotic brown, almost black, of his Betazoid heritage and several Trill spots could be seen peeking out over the collar of his uniform. The tan he usually had was long since faded being in the artificial lights of a star ship and his hair had returned to its normal dark brown, leaving the normal sun bleached appearance back home. He smiled reassuringly at the younger officer as he took a seat himself behind the desk.

“How have you been settling in? No trouble so far, I hope?”

Lieutenant Ezeami - COS

Wyatt stepped inside letting the door shut behind him and walked over taking a seat in the chair. He gave a warm smile to Oliver and he could see that wyatt had heterochromia his left eye was a jade green and his right as a light blue it made him stand out for sure.
Good Sir the ship is a lot bigger then I thought it would be but I will hopefully not get myself to lost

Ollie settled back into the chair and nodded, “The first time living on a star ship can seem a little daunting. I mean, they really are gigantic monstrosities flying through space so you’re bound to take a wrong turn every now and again. Just remember, our department has to be able to get anywhere on this ship in a moment’s notice so try not to have a wrong turn moment when its an actual emergency.”

He regarded the ensign, thinking back to his first posting not so long ago. There had been so many feelings and nerves, but as big as a starship is, people generally fall into routines very quickly. It would be the same with Wyatt he was sure.

“So tell me more about yourself. I’ve of course had some time to go over your official personnel file, but what do you think are the most important things I should know about you so we can successfully work together?”

Lieutenant Ezeami - COS

Wyatt scratched the back of his head, a small, nervous habit betraying the thoughts racing through his mind. For a moment, he hesitated, eyes flicking up to meet the officer’s gaze before settling somewhere just past his shoulder.

“What would you like to know, sir?” he asked at last, his tone respectful but guarded.

He drew in a slow breath, steadying himself, then continued. “I grew up in a small town in Iowa. One of those places where everyone knows your name before you’re old enough to understand what that means. There wasn’t much to it—long roads, quiet nights, and expectations that weighed heavier than they looked.”

His jaw tightened slightly as he spoke. “I went to work when I was sixteen. Not because I wanted to, but because I had to. Work meant independence. It meant survival. It taught me how to stand on my own two feet long before I was ready—but ready or not, I learned fast.”

Ollie noted the different emotions as the ensign spoke and gave him a reassuring smile. He remembered some of his own struggles growing up as one who was different and offered up some thanks to the universe that he had found people who didn’t mind.

“I’m sorry that you had to grow up before you were quite ready,” he said gently, “but I’m happy for your accomplishments and that it brought a talented officer to sit across from me here today. What goals do you have for yourself here on the ship?”

Lieutenant Ezeami - COS

Wyatt was quiet for a moment, staring at the floor as if the answer were written somewhere between the scuffed tiles and his own doubts. At last, he drew in a slow breath.

“I want to prove that I’m not a failure,” he said. “Not the way everyone seems to think I am. I’ve spent so long being told what I can’t be, what I’ll never amount to, that sometimes I almost start to believe it myself. But I don’t want to live like that anymore. I want to show that I can be who I truly am and still succeed—that being myself doesn’t mean I’m weak, broken, or unworthy.”

He lifted his gaze, determination hardening in his eyes.

“More than anything, I think I want to prove it to myself. I want to know that all the hours of training, all the discipline, all the sacrifices weren’t for nothing. I want to work harder than anyone expects of me. I want to stand on my own feet and do what I was trained to do—not because I’m trying to please others, but because this is the path I chose. I want to earn my place, not by pretending to be someone else, but by becoming the best version of who I already am.”

Ollie leaned back in his chair and studied the young ensign, a smile slowly spreading on his face.

“I love that answer, Ensign, its honestly quite inspiring. You have to be true to yourself or life will be an uphill battle that you probably won’t win. I think your story proves that you do have what it takes to overcome the rough hand that was dealt to you and succeed in one of the most rigorous programs in the Federation to come sit here in this office today. You are worthy, you deserve to be here and as long as I am in charge of the department we are all going to have each other’s backs. I will always be an advocate for you and I will also always hold you accountable to being the best Starfleet officer you can be. I also want to empower you to do the same for me and your fellow officers.”

He leaned forward again, folding his arms on the desk, his smile full of the pride that he felt remembering his own journey through the Academy to where he sat today.

“Welcome to the Ark Angel, Ensign.”

Lieutenant Ezeami - COS

He smiles at him, a mix of gratitude and barely contained excitement in his eyes. “Thank you, sir. I truly appreciate this opportunity. I’m more excited than I can put into words. Ever since I was a child, this has been my dream—something I held onto even when things were difficult, even when I doubted myself. To finally be standing here, given the chance to work, to prove what I can do… it means everything to me. I won’t take it for granted. I promise I’ll give this my absolute best.”

Ollie stood and straightened his uniform, giving the ensign another smile.

“Well, Ensign, I have probably taken enough of your time for today. I have an open door policy, so please feel free to stop by anytime for anything you need. I want all of us to feel at home here. Also, I may be the department head but I’m still in this with you and the rest of the security officers. We will probably be running some drills this week so we can all get more familiar with each other’s strengths. You should stop by Sickbay for your physical and the counselor’s office right after you leave here to get cleared for duty. After that, I’ll get you on the department schedule.”

Lieutenant Ezeami - COS

Thank you sure i will go to the med bay next then the counselor when they can get me.
