Katie believed that she knew exactly what the security officer standing next to the main entry hatch was thinking when he saw her approaching. Ah. So the new officer is an albino. And she could accept that though it was not true. Other than one portion of the population born on Mars, almost no humans in the fleet had hair as white as hers and a youthful appearance. Other than albinos that is. Unlike true albinos though, only Katie’s hair was devoid of pigmentation.

“Request permission to come aboard,” Katie said as she presented the PADD to the security officer.

The man was grim faced as he surveyed her orders on the PADD.

“LtJg Katherine Hobbes. Engineering officer,” the security officer said.

“My friends call me Katie but you can call me Lieutenant, or Miss Hobbes, or Ma’am,” Katie said. “I assume it is safe to say that my gear is in my quarters.”

“Yes, ma’am. You will be on Deck 42, compartment 5,” the security officer said. He handed her PADD back to her. “You were assigned to Ark Angel some years ago weren’t you?”

Katie smiled slightly at the man.

“Yes. It has been the better part of four years since I was onboard,” she said. She paused. “Are you going to say the magic words?”

“Magic words? Please?”

“No. Permission granted,” Katie said. “Is the CMO’s office still located on Deck 12?”

“Yes, ma’am. And permission granted. Welcome aboard,” the security said. ” By the way. Starfleet Intelligence was asking about you. Nothing serious, I hope.”

Katie sighed. Her brother, Nicholas had missing for… how long had it been? Six years now? And they were still trying to locate him? If nothing else, they were relentless.

“For reasons I can barely comprehend, they like to keep close tabs on me. It is a family matter and they keep thinking I will be able to provide them with some new information,” Katie said. She shrugged and smiled at the man. “If you will excuse me, I have to check in with something approaching half the crew.”

“Starting with the CMO?”

“It seems an appropriate place to begin,” Katie said.
