Yoshida had left sickbay after informing Spenn and Batario that they were assigned to the away team and headed to the shuttle bay. He began to prep the shuttle as he waited for the others to arrive. In his head, he began running scenarios. If there was a dampening field, the shuttle would lose power as soon as it crossed it and they wouldn’t be able to beam out. Also, if there was a dampening field, is it also creating an illusion around the Starbase? Is that why it didn’t look damaged? Yoshida tried to focus on how he could get them out of the dampening field. Perhaps they could rig the thrusters to discharge and push them back out of the field’s range. It’s a possibility. This is one of the reasons he wanted O’Nell on the away mission. If they find themselves stranded out there, him and Lt. Grey would be there best bet to make it back to the Ark Angel.

LTJG Ezeami arrived in the shuttle bay a few moments later. He had a phaser rifle slung across his back and a Type 2 phaser holstered at his side. Stepping inside the shuttle he greeted the XO and gestured to another phaser rifle he carried in his hands.

“I brought this in case you want something a little bigger than the standard.”

“Thank you, Lieutenant,” Yoshida said taking the rifle. Then he had a thought that brought a smile to his face, “Imagine if there was a mistake, and we showed up armed to the teeth? An amusing picture, eh?”

“Nothing like a first impression, or something like that,” he grinned back.

Riley entered the shuttle a few minutes later and started the preflight checks and started to make a few modifications to the shuttles shields. So if there was a dampening field they had a way to get out. He reached into his tool box and pulled out a par of glasses he has been working on. The glasses he had where something of his own design keeping the users hands as free as possible.

“Lt. O’Nell,” Yoshida said heading over to him, “I trust you have some modifications to asssist against the possibility of a dampening field?”

Riley turned in his set “ Ah Lad I have a few tricks I can throw in but the best plan I have is to surround the shuttle power core with a personal shield generator. This way where their power shielded. The damping field will have to seek through our modulating shields through our hull that will be polarized and to get through the power core personal shield. It is a multi layer plan”

Yoshida gave an understanding nod and said, “Make it so, Lieutenant. Ezeami, help me check over the shuttle while we wait for the others.”

“Aye, sir,” Ollie nodded at the XO.

He began working through the pre-flight safety checklist, pushing down the excitement that was starting to build. It had been awhile since he had been on an away mission with all of the transfer processes and this one could go either way.

James jogged into the shuttlebay with his Tricorder attached to his hip and a small case slung around his shoulder, just extra stabilisation gear for sensor locks.

As Riley was in the pilot seat still going working on the pre flight systems making sure everything was working properly. He always did enjoy flying the shuttle over a large vessel.

As they all arrived, Yoshida ushered them into the shuttle and took the copilot seat next to O’Nell. Over the comms, they heard Captain Becket say =/\= _ bridge to shuttle bay prepare to launch the shuttle.=/\=
Yoshida tapped at the consile and replied, =/\=_Shuttle to Bridge. Ready for launch.=/\= “Ready or not, here we come.” Yoshida said as the shuttle bay doors opened out into the void of space between them and the Starbase.

Spenn chose this moment to speak up. “Lieutenant Commander Yoshida, I find it logical to know what is the most probable outcome on Starbase 342 so that Ensign Batario and I be adequately prepared.” He requested in his typical passionless Vulcan tone.

Yoshida gave a look to the Vulcan and then back out the viewing window. “Unfortunately,” he said, “I cannot give you a satisfactory answer. Since we had received the distress call of an attack, we had believed we’d be entering an active combat situation. But, upon arrival, the Starbase appears to be functioning normally. Either the appearance of order we see is a trap of some kind, or the initial transmission itself could have been a fabrication. To what end, I am unsure, but the only way for us to know is by going to the Starbase ourselves and obtaining answers.”

Yoshida looked away from the viewport to the assembled team. “You all were selected for this mission because the captain and I wanted our most skilled people to be the ones to assess the situation on the Starbase. Stay alert, stay vigilant.”

=/\=Shuttle to bridge.=/\= Yoshida said into the comms, =/\=We are vacating the shuttle bay now.=/\= He turned to O’Nell and said, “Engage, Lieutenant.”

Riley activated the engines and exited the shuttle bay he then let the shuttle complete a scan of the space around the station.

“Well I am not picking up anything on my scans”

he said he slowly flew the shuttle towards the station with caution.

“Keep the scans going,” Yoshida said, “I have a bad feeling about this.”

Riley looked over his shoulder and said “you mind if I activated the shielded power core now. Cuz if something happens I wanna get moving and I want everyone to strap him back there”

Ollie sat back into his seat and buckled the safety harnesses. He could feel the range of emotions from the rest of the crew as he looked around at them. After a quick, calming breath he set his face to one of cool confidence and waited.

Riley took the shuttle in closer to the station with the shield activated, hull polarized, and the shielded power core working together

Power readings from the shielded core remained stable, confirming that the shuttle could withstand a limited external impact or energy surge if necessary.

Long-range sensors began to return clearer telemetry as the interference thinned. Portions of the station’s outer superstructure showed visible scarring—burn marks, micro-fractures, and incomplete repair patches—suggesting recent activity or an unresolved incident. Automated traffic control signals were present but degraded, repeating a low-priority approach beacon rather than issuing standard docking instructions.

At this range, the shuttle’s shields detected intermittent energy fluctuations emanating from the starbase’s lower habitat ring. The readings were not immediately hostile, but they were inconsistent with normal station operations, hinting at either emergency power rerouting or an unknown system still cycling through recovery protocols.

The shuttle remained unchallenged as it moved into a holding position just outside standard docking range. Riley’s precautions had clearly prevented any sudden system feedback or navigational hazard, buying the away team valuable time to assess their next move.

“I need someone to start transmitting all data readings to the Ark Angel they have the ability to do a analysis on the data and learn more” he said as he pilot in the shuttle through the debris around the station.

Yoshida nodded and turned to the Ensign Science officer. “T’Varan, start the transmission to the Ark Angel. Lt. Ezeami, try hailing the Starbase while O’Nell tries to dock the shuttle so we can have a look around.”
