The bar was quiet in that way that only existed before opening, not empty, just waiting.

Lights were set low but warm, enough to soften the edges of the room without dimming it into obscurity. The counter gleamed under the overhead panels, each surface wiped down one final time despite already being spotless. A handful of stools sat neatly in place, evenly spaced and untouched.

Behind the bar, Evan moved with unhurried purpose.

He adjusted a bottle here, nudged a glass there, then stepped back to take it in. Nothing extravagant. Nothing flashy. Just order, intention, and space, room for people to arrive carrying whatever the day had left them with.

A mirror ran the length of the back wall behind the bar, polished to a soft shine. Etched cleanly across the glass, understated but unmistakable, were four simple words:

NO RANK AT THE BAR

They weren’t decorative. They were policy.

From a small speaker tucked discreetly near the back wall, the low crackle of a vinyl record drifted through the room. Ain’t No Sunshine by Bill Withers played quietly, familiar and restrained, settling into the space rather than demanding attention.

Evan reached beneath the counter and checked the lineup one last time. Glassware sat ready, some replicated, most not. Bottles were arranged with care, familiar standards beside a few quiet experiments pulled together over the last few days. Comfort stood shoulder to shoulder with curiosity, waiting to see which would be chosen first.

He glanced at the clock mounted on the wall, then adjusted the lighting a fraction lower. As he finished his final preparations for the night ahead, Evan caught himself singing along softly.

“Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone,” he murmured, barely louder than the crackle of the record.

Satisfied, he took his place behind the bar and rested his hands lightly on the counter’s edge.

The doors slid open with a soft hiss.

Evan looked up, expression easy and observant, welcoming without being intrusive.

“Evening,” he said calmly. “Bar’s open.”

He waited, letting the room decide what it wanted to be.

Evan Calder
Bartender

Captain Becket had just gotten off of his shift for the night allowing the night shift to take over for the night. He had reached 18 forward as the doors slid wide open right in front of him and closed right behind him. “I see you have made yourself comfortable. I’m happy to see that.” Becket said with a smile. “What do we have back there my friend?” He asked.

The doors whooshed open again and Cross stroll through. He was off duty as well and wore a comfortable linen tunic and pant set. He saw Calder at the bar with the Captain just heading towards the bar himself. He moved over to join them.
“Evening, gentlemen.” He said with a smile as he read the #1 rule on the mirror and refrained from using the Captain’s rank.
