Wyatt walked briskly down the narrow, brightly lit corridors toward the ready room, his boots echoing softly against the metal floor. It was his first assignment, and to say he was nervous would be an understatement—it barely touched the surface of what he was feeling. His chest tightened with each step, and his hands twitched slightly at his sides. He had worked tirelessly to get here, dedicating himself to every lesson, every drill, every simulation. His instructors had often remarked on his sharp mind, praising his ability to strategize under pressure and think quickly on his feet, even if he tended to be quiet and reserved.

Trust had never come easily to Wyatt. His past had taught him caution, the kind that made friendships difficult and connections fleeting. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to rely on others; it was that he had learned the hard way how easily trust could be broken. Even now, as he approached the ready room, he felt the familiar tension of someone who had always been on guard, someone who carried the weight of past betrayals in every careful step.

He paused for a moment, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, trying to calm the rapid rhythm of his heart. He straightened his uniform, smoothing down the crisp lines, and ran a hand through his dark brown hair, forcing himself to focus. This was his chance, and he would do whatever it took to prove himself—not just to his superiors, but to himself.

The stakes felt higher than ever. The captain, the medical team, and even the Head of Security knew his secret. He had heard countless horror stories about people like him being treated poorly—or worse—on other ships. And yet, he had also heard whispers of this captain’s fairness, of a crew that valued skill and loyalty over prejudice. He had clung to those stories like a lifeline, hoping that they were true.

Another deep breath, slower this time, letting it steady him. His hand moved to the control panel beside the door. He pressed the button, and the soft chime echoed through the corridor, announcing his arrival. His pulse surged in anticipation as the door began to slide open, revealing the ready room and the people within. Wyatt squared his shoulders, lifting his chin. This was it—no turning back now.

He heard the chime. “Enter,” Captain Becket said, grabbing a cup of tea and a cracker to eat.

Wyatt took a deep breath coming in “Sir I’m Wyatt Blackford…I’m reporting for duty”

He sat there with a smile. “Ah, yes. My new security officer. Have you managed to find your way around well enough?” Becket asked. “Can I get you something to drink something to eat, ensign?” He asked another question.

“Very well, ensign. Now, from what it says here in your record, you have just recently gotten out of the academy. Could you tell me about your experience at the academy? What brought you to the Ark Angel? What am I to expect from performance? Sorry for all the questions. I would like to know who I have under my command alongside your Department Head. I always like to know my new officers.” Captain Becket had brought up to the young ensign who had just been fresh out of the academy; however, Alex likes to know and hear from the young officer himself.

Wyatt hesitated, jaw tightening for just a moment before he relaxed his stance. “Sir… the Academy was challenging. Not just academically.” He paused, choosing his words carefully. “The coursework pushed me harder than anything I’d experienced before. Tactical theory, simulations, security drills—I struggled at first, especially with the pace. I don’t always process information as quickly as others.”

“But I learned,” Wyatt continued. “I learned how to slow down under pressure. How to analyze instead of react. In simulations, I found that staying calm—thinking three moves ahead—often mattered more than speed. My instructors noticed that.”

He shifted his weight slightly, eyes dropping to the deck for a heartbeat before lifting again. “Socially… it was harder. A lot of cadets came from Starfleet families. They knew they belonged there. I didn’t always feel the same.” His voice stayed steady, but there was an edge beneath it. “There were moments I was judged for my past. For who I am. Starfleet teaches inclusion, but not everyone learns the lesson at the same pace.”

I focused on the work, I kept my head down and proved myself where it mattered—performance, discipline, reliability. I didn’t need everyone to like me. I needed them to trust me when things went wrong.”
