Having spent some time with Engineering, Yoshida made his way to the Science Offices to meet with Lt. Grey, the Chief Science Officer. While not a scientist himself, Yoshida thought of himself as a science enthusiast. He enjoyed learning the why’s and wherefore’s of the universe, and also enjoyed speaking with those who were smarter than himself. Where some might be find themselves insecure or looked down on when speaking with someone of such higher intellect, Yoshida reveled in the opportunity to expand his knowledge of the universe. He was curious as to what Grey’s specialties and expertise was in and what he might be able to get him to discuss.

Yoshida walked to the office and rang the door chime, awaiting a response.

“Come in, no wait” A crash, then a string of curses “No, don’t, get back…” A shout and another profanity-laden tirade before a final crunching sound. A moment passed and then a very extremely calm voice “Enter”

The office was fairly standard, a desk with two chairs, and a large console in the corner to monitor the various experiments going around. The large glass window overlooking the lab proper turned opaque for privacy. James Grey sat behind his desk a smile so casual that it was almost suspicious. There was a slight crease of what looked like whipped cream on his right earlobe.

His smile turned genuine at the sight of Yoshida “Ah, sir, Welcome” He moved as if to stand then seemed to rethink it “Please have a seat”

CSO

Yoshida stepped gingerly inside the office and looked about with a raised eyebrow. Something seemed off about the office and the man sitting at the desk, but Yoshida did not want his relationship with the CSO to begin with accusations and interrogations. He took a seat at the chair offered, his face hard and unreadable.

“Good Evening, Lieutenant.” he said, “I was making my rounds to meet with all the department heads before we arrive at Starbase 342. You are next on my list.” Yoshida fixed the CSO with a solid look, still feeling something was off and trying to figure out without having to pry. “The goal for the meeting for us to introduce each other and make sure we are “on the same page,” as one would say, about how your department should be running and how I may assist in achieving that.”

James nodded, his smile turning more genuine “Well, that sounds good” He interlockedhis fingers and put his hands on his desk “Science is a simple department, although we can have mission-critical functions, we don’t directly influence the running of the ship, unless of course there are changes needed to coding and even then there are better coders in the engineering department than mine.” He took a breath “I’ve always preferred to cross-train my officers to work with the Engineering and Medical departments when fields overlap. I’ve always been of the opinion that we are Starfleet Officers first so we should be of use in any situation.”

“I like that philosophy, sir.” Yoshida said with a slight smile, “If you would like, I can see that, in our down time, we can begin departmental cross training in appropriate areas. I don’t think I would be sending security officers into the lab, necessarily, but I would have them cross training with medical, for example. Keep them up to date on trauma wounds so they are not so dependent on sick bay and can be trusted to provide field treatment when necessary. That sort of thing.”

James smiled and nodded, “That’s exactly it, but keeping up to date on our self-defence training is still good. But yeah, having personnel capable of sharing duties during emergencies is more than a little useful.” James considered, “Other than that, I’d only need assistance to order mission-specific tech from Starfleet, but right now we’re fully stocked on everything my department needs”

CSO

“That is good to hear,” Yoshida said. He stood up and straightened his uniform. “Should you find yourself in need of any equipment, send those requests to my office and we’ll see what we can do about acquiring them. Until then, it has been a pleasure speaking with you, sir.” He leaned over the desk and extended a hand to Grey.

James smiled and almost stood up again, then decided against it again. He simply shook the man’s hand “A pleasure, Commander, glad to have you with us.

CSO

Yoshida shook his hand, but noticed again his hesitation in standing. Yoshida furrowed his brow and asked, “Lieutenant, is everything alright?”
