Having finished with his psych eval, Yoshida made his way to the Security office to find the new Chief of Security. Yoshida was glad that they were able to fill the position before the mission, as he would have enough on his plate without having to run security as well. He looked forward to meeting someone as new to the ship as he was. Having been a CoS on his last ship, Yoshida felt they had much to talk about.

He stopped at the Security Office and rang the door chime and waited for a response.

Ollie was sorting through personnel and armory reports at his desk, attempting to familiarize himself with this department, when he heard the unexpected chime. He glanced up and felt the presence of the XO outside and then slowly looked around at the security office. Things were in a little bit of disarray since there had been some time between the departure of the previous COS and Ollie’s arrival.

He gave a resigned sigh at the thought of how this first impression was going to go and then stood up, “Come in, sir.”

LTJG Ezeami - COS

The door swished open and Yoshida stepped in. He looked around at the disarray of papers and raised a disapproving eyebrow. “Still getting settled?” He asked standing next to the chair on the opposite side of the desk. “It’s understandable,” He said, “You’re newer to the ship than even I am. I am merely disappointed in how your predecessor kept his post. I myself was Chief of Security on my last vessel and was nearly placed into that position again.” His eyes refocused onto the Lieutenant. “Outside of my psych eval and physical, you are the first department head I am visiting with today. My goal is to help establish how you look to run your department and How I can assist you in that endeavor.”

Ollie blushed slightly at the pointed comment on the state of the office.

“Yes sir,” he said with an uncomfortable chuckle, “I came directly here after my check-ins and haven’t had a chance to get things squared away. I’m honestly not sure if it was left this way by my predecessor or if the lack of a chief has led to a breakdown of discipline. Either way, you have my word that this is not how I will be keeping things.”

Yoshida gave an approving nod. “If it does prove to be a lax in discipline aboard the ship, I’m sure between the two of us, we will make the correct adjustments.”

He pondered the XO’s comments on helping to make running the department easier. This was literally his first day on the job as a security chief and, while he had passed all of the tests to become the chief, it was nice to know that the XO had held this position in the past and could be a good resource.

“Sir, I think I don’t really know what I need yet. The next thing on my list was to inventory our equipment and make sure it is all in working order and then run a few drills with the staff to make sure we are all up to the level we should be. Once I’ve completed that I may have some requests for you. I suppose it would come down to that: I know resources can be scarce but I want to be sure we prioritize being able to protect the ship and its crew from threats,” he paused for a moment and then continued with a smirk “And I promise that I will keep my requests focused on needs and not ‘toys’… mostly.”

“Good answer,” Yoshida said, the corners of his mouth turning up slightly, “I agree with your steps. If it is amenable to you, I would like to be present for your drills. I’d like to see our current readiness myself. We should plan to have these drills as soon as we can, as we shall be approaching Starbase 342 in just a few days, I believe, and I will want to know what we can expect of our security personnel.”

Ollie glanced around at the office again and gave a small nod. “I agree, it’s time to see what we are working with. I will assemble the department in the training facilities so we can run them through the basics and see where we need to make some tweaks. I would greatly appreciate your experience there, sir. Do you want some time to finish with the other departments first?”

He set down one PADD and picked up another with the roster of all his junior officers.

“I appreciate you asking,” Yoshida said, “But I plan to finish my meetings with the other department heads by the end of the day. Do you think you could have a drill ready by tomorrow?”

“Of course, sir,” Ollie nodded. “I would like to take the team through some hand to hand and marksmanship drills since I would expect those are the most likely skills we may need on the starbase. If there is anything else you want me to run them through I’m happy to do that as well. I will get the training facilities set up here and we could plan to start at 0800 if that fits into your schedule?”

“That sounds appropriate.” Yoshida said, “I would add in some ambush training as well. Make sure they’re ready to handle a surprise. As for my schedule, I feel that few things will be “fitting” in it for some time. but I will make time to come by for the drills and training.”
