USS Ark Angel

Seeing Mackenzie

Alex had been midway through a routine systems review when the soft chime of a priority channel cut through the hum of the bridge. The console pulsed with the unmistakable insignia of Starfleet Command, and for reasons he couldn’t immediately explain, a quiet tension settled in his chest. Priority messages rarely carried good news, and yet this one felt different—heavier, more personal.

As the transmission resolved, a single name appeared on the display. Mackenzie. For a moment, the world around him seemed to narrow, the stars outside the viewport blurring into insignificance. It was a name he hadn’t seen in years, yet it lived vividly in his memory, etched there by shared duty, shared hardship, and something far deeper than regulations ever allowed.

Mackenzie was not just another officer from his past. She was someone who had stood beside him through long watches and impossible odds aboard the USS Saracen. Together, they had faced hostile borders, emergency warp jumps, and nights when sleep was a luxury neither of them could afford. In those moments, trust had been forged quickly—and once forged, it never truly faded.

Their conversations had gone far beyond duty rosters and mission briefings. Over years of service, they spoke of hopes, doubts, and the quiet fears that crept in during the empty hours between stars. Mackenzie had a way of grounding him, of reminding him why he wore the uniform when the cost of command felt too high.

Alex remembered the way she challenged him—never disrespectfully, but honestly. She questioned orders when they didn’t sit right, pushed him to see angles he might have missed, and never let him retreat into rank when what was needed was humanity. It was one of the many reasons he had grown to care for her as deeply as he did.

Love had never been spoken aloud between them, at least not in words that Starfleet would recognize. But it existed all the same, in shared glances across the bridge, in the instinctive way they moved together during crisis, and in the silence that followed their eventual reassignment to different postings.

Seeing her name now stirred emotions Alex thought he had long since compartmentalized. He wondered where she had been, what she had become, and whether the years had changed her as much as they had changed him. Starfleet had a way of reshaping people, sometimes subtly, sometimes irreversibly.

The message itself was brief, formal, precise, and frustratingly vague. A reassignment. A convergence of paths. No explanation beyond operational necessity. Yet Alex knew Starfleet Command rarely dealt in coincidence, especially when it came to personnel with shared history.

He leaned back slightly, exhaling as he stared at the stars ahead. Duty demanded composure, clarity, and focus—but memory had its own gravity. Whatever awaited him now, Mackenzie’s reappearance meant more than a simple change in orders. It meant unfinished chapters.

As Alex acknowledged the ping and prepared to move forward, one truth settled firmly in his mind. No matter how many years had passed or how far apart their journeys had taken them, some bonds endured beyond time, distance, and rank. And whatever this reunion would bring, it would change them both.
