The low hum of the Ark Angel’s shuttle bay echoed off polished duranium bulkheads as Lieutenant Commander Alex Becket stood firmly at attention near the marked landing zone. The cavernous space was alive with movement—deck crews guiding cargo sleds, engineers running final diagnostic sweeps, and the steady glow of status lights reflecting off the shuttle’s atmospheric shielding grid.

Becket clasped his hands behind his back, posture precise but relaxed, his eyes fixed on the force-field barrier that shimmered in anticipation of the incoming arrival. Today was more than just a routine personnel transfer. The new Helmsman Chief/Operations Chief was inbound, and with recent tensions along the frontier, Starfleet had deemed it necessary to assign someone with a reputation for both discipline and unpredictability.

The bay lights dimmed briefly, then brightened as the shuttle pierced through the force field in a smooth arc, repulsion flaring softly as it touched down. Steam curled from the cooling vents, and for a moment the entire bay seemed to hold its breath.

The hatch cycled open.

Becket straightened his uniform jacket, expression unreadable but alert.

Flashback to earlier in the day

today was unlike any other day for jax. sure he had just gotten off of a previous posting on another starship and got to spend some time at home on alpha centari. Howeverr this time reporting to a new post was different he loved the helm but being the chief operations officer hat was new to him. he got out of his bed and went to the replicator in his apartment “eggs with bacon he said and a hot chocolate” he said. the replicator beeped to life and he set down to eat his breakfast. eventually it was time for him to head back to the space port and report to the shuttle craft. thankfully he had backed his bag a couple of days prior, upon arrival to the space port he checked in and settled into the flight.

eventually the shuttle got closer to the U.S.S Ark Angel, as the shuttle came into land Jax thought to himself “boy is she a beautiful ship.” eventually the shuttle landed and the door opened before jax saw Lt Commander Becket standing their waiting for him.

“i assume you must be the LT Commander i was told to meet” he said

“Yes, Lieutenant. Welcome aboard the Ark Angel.”
Becket stood tall in the shuttle bay, a confident but welcoming smile easing some of the tension in the room. The ambient hum of the ship’s systems and the faint echo of foot traffic in the distance framed the moment as he regarded the new arrival. His hands rested calmly behind his back, posture crisp yet relaxed—classic Becket professionalism with a touch of warmth reserved for new crew members.

“So, I hear this is all pretty new to you… Am I guessing right?” he asked, studying Lieutenant Jax Storm with genuine curiosity. His tone carried no judgment, only the kind of interest that suggested he’d already looked over the lieutenant’s file and wanted to understand the officer behind the credentials. The faint smile remained as he waited, giving Storm space to settle, breathe, and answer on his own terms.

“yes it is I was only a helmsman on my last posting this whole chief thing is relatively new to me.” he said nervously ” I mean im used to starships and used to race them back home but this its a whole pardon me for saying different animal” “if you have the time i would love to see the bridge” he said before grabing his data pad out of his bag to see a map of the ship and find where he needed to go.

Becket let out a warm chuckle, the sound echoing lightly in the shuttle bay. “A different animal is one way to put it,” he said, nodding in understanding. “But don’t worry, Lieutenant—every chief started exactly where you are. The fact that you were a helmsman and a racer? That tells me you’ve already got instincts most officers spend years trying to develop.” His tone was reassuring, steady, the kind meant to pull tension out of a nervous new arrival rather than add to it.

He watched Storm wrestle with his bag and datapad before raising a hand in a gentle gesture. “You don’t need the map. I’ve got the time, and I’ll take you up myself.” Becket stepped forward, motioning toward the corridor leading to the turbolifts. “Consider this your first unofficial orientation. The Ark Angel has her quirks, but she treats you well once you get to know her.” A small smile pulled at the corner of his mouth. “Come on, Lieutenant. Let’s get you to the bridge.”

While the Ark Angel was considered a legend in many circles, it seemed like the next great adventure for Ensign Moore. He had only been serving a couple years, but already felt up to the challenge of the Mythology-class explorer. In fact, it would be a nice change of pace from the Saracen and managing the Armadillo shuttles and other craft. Instead of the small fleet of battleship auxiliaries, he’d be helping manage the multiple bays of varying craft and workerbees. And was just the flight ops part of the job, and his SO would undoubtedly have loads for him to do.

Moore made his way onto the vessel and checked in with the bosun. He dropped off his gear at his assigned small (but quite sufficient) quarters, and headed up to the bridge. He would make his way down to the shuttle bays as soon as he could. He was not yet on duty, so he had time to meander about. They didn’t normally allow meandering per se, especially when not on duty, but he was able to take in the bridge for just a brief moment.

Before Sean could even entertaining lingering, the lift doors swooshed open revealing what he presumed were some of his superiors. Their dossiers were still fresh in his brain. The ensign turned and snapped to a salute as an NCO called the bridge to attention. “Sirs,” he managed as the two exited the lift.

He heard the Ensign. “Go ahead Ensign this is Lieutenant Commander Becket.” He replied back.

“Ensign Moore reporting,” Sean replied. There was an air of confidence in his words, but he was a tad nervous, caught off guard that they showed up on the bridge at the same time he happened to be there. “Ready to serve in Operations and Helm as ordered, sir.”

He looked to LtJG Storm as well to ensure he was addressing both officers. “Just marveling at the bridge - can’t wait to see her in action!”

“Indeed shes quite a fine ship i just got here myself” storm said

Sean smiled, taking it in. “We can get into more specifics later, sirs, but I can assist in both the helm and navigation side of things, or in the operational and flight control side. Just let me know your preference and the bridge and shuttle bay rotations, and I’ll be there.” Moore really was ready for the whole gamut of tasks, even from his short career.

“Of Course If the captains cool with it id say man the helm and take us out” storm said “it would also be useful to to a inventory of the shuttle crafts to see what needs to be repaired.”

He smiled. “I’m fine with it Lieutenant. But however, he is your junior officer. Under your command in your department. However, I am fine with it.” Becket said.
