The low hum of the Ark Angel’s shuttle bay echoed off polished duranium bulkheads as Lieutenant Commander Alex Becket stood firmly at attention near the marked landing zone. The cavernous space was alive with movement—deck crews guiding cargo sleds, engineers running final diagnostic sweeps, and the steady glow of status lights reflecting off the shuttle’s atmospheric shielding grid.Becket clasped his hands behind his back, posture precise but relaxed, his eyes fixed on the force-field barrier that shimmered in anticipation of the incoming arrival. Today was more than just a routine personnel transfer. The new Science Chief was inbound, and with recent tensions along the frontier, Star-fleet had deemed it necessary to assign someone with a reputation for both discipline and unpredictability.
At his side stood James Grey, a seasoned operations specialist whose easy demeanor contrasted with Becket’s formality. He shifted his weight slightly, glancing toward the console as it pinged confirmation of an approaching craft.
The bay lights dimmed briefly, then brightened as the shuttle pierced through the force field in a smooth arc, repulsion flaring softly as it touched down. Steam curled from the cooling vents, and for a moment the entire bay seemed to hold its breath.
The hatch cycled open.
Becket straightened his uniform jacket, expression unreadable but alert.

U.S.S. Ark AngelA tall, dark-haired man stepped out of the shuttle, slightly bending his head before walking down the ramp. He was slender, in his fifties. A man you would hardly take note of if it wasn’t for his height and the wide, welcoming smile on his face, equal parts delight and mischief. He had a duffel bag hanging from his left shoulde,r which he dropped when he stopped close to Becket, a little too close. He put one hand on the Commander’s shoulder “Hello, sir, Lieutenant James Grey Reporting for duty” His voice was deep but carried a lighness to it, a joy. He had nearly fifteen years on the Commander, but if anyone had to guess by their bearings, then the older man seemed decidedly less composed. Despite how it seemed, he had an easy grace, a confidence that his cheerful attitude was not an issue.

Alex stood there smiling. “Welcome aboard the Ark Angel Lieutenant. Star-fleet told me in a communique that I was receiving a new science Chief.” He said with a smile.

U.S.S. Ark AngelJames chuckled, “They’ll do that” He patted the younger man’s shoulder and walked on, looking around “It’s been a while since I’ve been on a Myhtology class ship, I remember when they were first unveiled.” He smiled wider “Ushering in a new age of exploration. Of course I got stationed on a diplomatic mission planetside, didn’t see one in action until they were already old news” He chukled.

He checked as the lieutenants landed on his shoulder. “Well I’m just glad that I have you on board.” He started. “So tell me a bit about yourself.”

U.S.S. Ark AngelJames nodded and took his hand off Becket’s shoulder just to rub his hands together as he considered “Well, I’ve been in Starfleet for nearly thirty years now, graduated the Academy just before the Dominion war started, spent most of my time during the war doing some minor research on Mars. After the war I spent a few years on DS3. Spent much of my early career in research, did some work at the Theoretical Research Department on Earth. Worked a little with the diplomatic corps so when the embassy on Corvan V opened up, I was sent there. Stayed for a little bit, made some friends” He sighed whistfully
“Let’s see, I came back to Earth, was an instructor on the Challenger for a minute, then taught at the Academy, joined the Federation Science Council for a few years, went to Vulcan to teach at their Science Academy and did some diplomatic work with the Human embassy there.” He kept going as if he were simply reciting average career moves “Then I hopped around a few ships as Science Chief, the Constellation, the Brian A. Olinksi, the Chandragupta Maurya.” He nodded as if almost over “Had a little incident on the Gupta so I spent little time recovering on Earth, and I taught Theoretical Physics and XenoAnthropology for the past two years.” He nodded, pleased with his career biography.
“I get bored easily so I occasionally spend my free time gathering Doctorates, Quantum Physics, theoretical physics, and XenoAnthropology. The former two technically overlap, but I liked the Idea of having a degree in each. I also have a major in Federation history, and I qualified as a First Contact Specialist with the Diplomatic Corps. I also prefer rosé over red or white wine, pork over beef or lamb. I have a slight penchant for pranks and minor mischief. I had an evil clone in the eighties, but he is most likely dead, or a ferret. The tests were unclear” His expression did not give away if he was joking or not about the last statement. His expression turned serious “I am a Pacifist and prefer to avoid violence when possible, but I understand well that the job does require it at times.”

He stood there for a while. “Quite a history for work. I love it. Well like I said welcome aboard. And I can show you to the bridge if you’d like.” He said with a smile.
