T’Mor waited patiently in the medical bay. Nothing seemed terribly wrong from the outside, only because she was intentionally covering it up. The only indication something was wrong was the occasional scratching and itching at her arms. Only for her to cover them up immediately afterwards. This was a recurring condition. One that brought a lot of discomfort, and not just because of the rash. It served as a manifestation of her lack of control over her own emotions.

T’Mor had no plans to discuss it in depth, however. She was here to simply report the problem, perhaps received some topical treatment that could last a few days, and ultimately ignore the underlying problem until the symptoms went away.

Gavin had finished examining a patient when he noticed the Chief Science Officer waiting at one of the biobeds. “Something I can assist you with, T’Mor?” The Doctor asked as he approached the woman.

“Oh, yes Doctor…” T’Mor said, her own thoughts interrupted,

“I am experiencing a… minor flare-up. It is not terribly concerning, but perhaps it is worth logging in my medical record. Only if you deem it necessary, of course.”

T’Mor pulled up her uniform sleeves, revealing her arms. The underside of each forearm was covered in slightly puffy green welts, each about a centimeter across. There were also some small scratch marks, likely self-inflicted.

Chief Science Officer|

“Hmmm, how long has this been going on?” Doctor Stacey asked as he opened the tricorder for some scans. Gavin noticed some scratch marks accompanying the welts, so they must have been itching badly.

“46 hours,” T’Mor stated, referring specifically to this outbreak in particular. The condition itself was on her medical record as recurring, being documented since she joined Star Fleet.

Gavin logged the time in the notes and then continued with the scan. “Has anything stressful happened in the past 72 hours?” The Doctor asked as he formulated a diagnosis using the data from the scans. Dr. Stacey saw from T’Mor’s file that this was recurring, but there should’ve been a more precise plan by the previous attending physician.

“Stressful?” T’Mor remarked with a raised eyebrow, “I’m assuming you mean physically or mentally taxing. As you know, Vulcans are not typically affected by emotional stress.”

“Even still, Vulcans possess emotions as everyone else, no matter how hidden from sight they may be,”. Doctor Stacey replied.

She leaned back and looked up at the ceiling, taking a deep breath to appear undisturbed.

“I have been working on some difficult- or rather, time consuming projects. Perhaps I have been ‘stressing’ my mental faculties without noticing.”

This was a misdirection, and she knew it. But what choice did she have? Admitting her feelings never worked out well before. It often just made people afraid.

“I’ll give you some analgesic cream for the irritation, along with 1ml of terakine,” Doctor Stacey stated. Gavin walked over to the dispensary and typed in the orders. Part of him knew T’Mor wasn’t telling him everything, but she came to him for medical treatment, that’s what he would give. Gavin placed the terakine into the hypospray and then picked up the cream.

“Apply a fingernail-sized amount of cream over the area nightly,” He stated while applying the hypospray to the Vulcan’s neck. “Though if this is reoccurring, there could be a deeper issue at play,” The Doctor added.

“If you have any theories, doctor,” she said, showing only the slightest hint of hesitation before continuing,

“I agree that determining the root cause would be helpful. It has been suggested it may be the result of an overactive immune response, like an allergy of some sort.”

|Lt., j.g. T’Mor,
Chief Science Officer|

“Your medical file doesn’t list an allergy,” Gavin replied, “However, we can run a series of panels to determine what you might be allergic to,” Doctor Stacey added. The CMO walked over to the dispensary.

“Computer, dispense a 20-panel allergen kit with known allergens for Vulcans.” Gavin said. Moments later a dish appeared with mini hyposprays attached to the tray.

“This test will be performed on your back,” The doctor stated as he picked up the tray and returned to his patient. “Once I dispense the tray on your back, it’ll take around 5 minutes for an immune system response, in which tiny bumps will occur.” Lt. Stacey placed the tray onto the bio bed, then turned to T’Mor. “Is this something you’d want to try?”

Lieutenant Junior Grade Gavin Stacey
Chief Medical Officer/CNS

“Yes,” T’Mor said with a nod, though not quite sure. Perhaps this would prove to be beneficial, a genuine allergy would make an excellent scapegoat for any future outbreaks. It would most likely not cause any harm to attempt the test anyway. Without further prompting she pulled up her uniform to expose part of her back.

“I would be curious to see the results…” she admitted.

Chief Science Officer|

Gavin placed the hypopack up to T’Mor’s back and released the substances. If there were any reactions, they would show within the next 20 minutes. The doctor made sure to have a nurse on standby to assist with any adverse reaction. However, Dr. Stacey did take note of T’Mor previously mentioning that she was under some stress, so if the panel didn’t come back with plausible results, then he was going to dip into some mental medicine. Meditation would never hurt.

T’Mor waited quietly, seeming a bit disconnected. The allergen panel would likely show nothing wrong. Then what? Should she just tell the doctor now? Wouldn’t they find out eventually? And then be upset that she wasted his time? What if she did have a bad reaction to the test and …

T’Mor’s pulse climbed steadily, going up as if tallying every out of control thought. Her breathing morphed into quiet gasps for air. The shaking was the worst part. T’Mor tensed up, gripping the top of the bed until her knuckles turned white. But it wasn’t enough to stop the trembling.

Chief Science Officer|

Gavin turned away from the T’Mor’s back and turned to face her. What he saw was a Vulcan ready to pop. “Are you okay?” The Doctor asked when he noticed her gripping the edge of the bed. Doctor Stacey had been around Vulcan’s long enough to notice when they’re using more strength than usual to suppress whatever they were feeling.

“I’m fine…” T’Mor said through gritted teeth, “Likely just a reaction to the allergen test. Is it not unusual for certain reactions to not cause a certain amount of distress?”

|Lt., j.g. T’Mor,
Chief Science Officer|

Gavin’s brow furrowed as he went to look at the CSO’s back. “Well, if it isn’t so, you have a slight reaction to the dander of Earth Felidae, or else known as lions, tigers, and house cats”, the CMO stated. Doctor Stacey wasn’t able to find any other allergens yet, but they still were still within the window for another 5 minutes.

T’Mor released slowly, making an effort to keep her breaths deep and even. Her breathing and heart rate gradually returned to normal. Finally, she looked up at Doctor Stacy.

“Thank you, doctor,” she said. Aware that such an allergy did not explain her current issue, nor did it explain what had just occurred. Surely Doctor Stacy could deduce that, and might already be suspecting something else.

bump

After a few quiet minutes, Doctor Stacey took another look at the Vulcan’s back. “Nothing changed in the past five minutes,” Gavin stated as he rounded the bio bed. “So, are we going to continue with this song and dance, or are you going to tell me what you think the real cause for that rash is?” He asked, putting on his Counselor hat.

T’Mor folded her arms, appearing slightly obstinate.

“I take it you believe, as so have postulated, that there is a phycological cause for my condition.”

|Lt., j.g. T’Mor, Chief Science Officer|

Gavin raised his brow at the CSO’s question. He thought yes to T’Mor’s question, but she was the first to bring it up. “How about you start at the beginning, and try not to put me through another rigmarole”. The Doctor stated.
