T’Mor was still getting used to the responsibilities associated with her new position. Even if she was still only an Acting Chief Science Officer, that was still no excuse for necessary operations to be overlooked. One of those responsibilities was making sure every oncoming science officer was given a proper introduction to the procedures and routines of the ship’s science team. She honestly had no idea where to start, having yet to develop said procedures or routines. But it was something the position was expected to do. So after hurriedly straightening up the notes on her desk, and tucking away her drawing journal out of sight, she made the call,

=^=Ensign Tak,=^= she called in a steady voice =^= Please report to the CSO Office at your earliest convenience.=^=

A little over an hour later, the chime on T’Mor’s door rang, and when the door opened, Tak scampered in, running on all fours for a moment before standing to her feet and giving the CSO a charming (and very toothy) smile. “Greetings. Apologies for how long it took to come, I was in the midst of a fascinating experiment and needed to ensure my lab area was fully cleaned before I was able to leave it.”

“That is perfectly fine, Ensign,” T’Mor said with a slight nod. She didn’t seem too terribly upset at Tak, and quietly hoped she didn’t come across that way. She turned and sat behind the desk, adjusting the chair to be slightly taller. With a gesture she pointed out the other seats opposite the desk,

“Please, have a seat.” she continued, “It is good you seem to be settling in so well. I don’t mean to intrude, and of course you are not required to discuss it if you don’t want to… but what sort of experiment were you running?”

Tak clambered up onto a chair and nodded. “Certainly! I was putting some of the insights I made during our latest mission into action. My field of study is eusocial animal species, and I was recently delivered a fascinating species from a nearby planet. They are very similar to bees, acting as pollinators for their habitat. I was studying some live specimens and seeing how they would interact to various stimuli. They seem to communicate through vibration, and I was able to influence the flight patch of the individuals I was studying by inputting my own vibrational patterns,” they explained cheerfully. “I am glad to be on a ship that explores the galaxy so much, it is very useful for accessing more varied test subjects.”

“Very interesting, Ensign,” T’Mor stated, seeming genuine as she could through her stoic delivery, “I look forward to your insights regarding this species and their communication. And I agree, working aboard a ship such as the Ark Angel affords many opportunities for scientific exploration. It is one of the reasons I transferred here myself.”

T’Mor paused, leaving the thought open for comment. She had never done an onboarding check-in before, so hopefully she was doing this right.

“For sure!” Tak replied with a wide grin, tapping their knees with their hands briefly. “Many insights have been made in the past by studying animals, I hope to do my part. Even if my study only results in knowledge that cannot be applied to anything, it is still valuable. That is what I like to remind my children when they ask why I’m not studying something useful,” they chuckled. “Although, I am uncertain what they would consider to be a useful field of study.”

“Such is the bias against many biological sciences,” T’Mor replied.

“Many don’t see the immediate applications, so they do not see the merit in the science. I respect your more nuanced viewpoint.”

“I study what I am passionate about. I have had a fascination with eusociality and the way a colony of organisms can behave similarly to a single organism of higher brain function,” Tak gave a toothy grin.

T’Mor’s expression remained steady but her focused gaze indicated genuine interest.

“I can tell you are very… passionate about your field of study. And it also appears you have found the facilities on board adequate to conduct your research.”
