=/\= Andone here Lieutenant. Are you capable of opening some form of communications to the nanites? Or interact with them in some way that we can further determine intelligence? Your last update implied you were going to use some other biological means to test their interactions beyond a simple lab sample. =/\= She said.

Tak stepped forward slightly, looking towards the Science Chief. “I may have some way of contributing…” they spoke, waiting for attention to turn towards them before continuing, “My specialty is in eusocial animal species, particularly in studying their “languages,” how they communicate with one another. If we can tap into this frequency to listen to it, I can translate it. Even if its not a language in the Sapient sense, it might still be a communication we can understand, and even change. That doesn’t necessarily mean these nanites are intelligent though, it could be the same level of communication as bee dances, ant scent trails, or tumpuk chromatophores.”

=^= Yes Sir. After exposure to biological materials, we have discovered that the nanites remain in communication even when interacting with separate and distinct samples. =^= T’Mor explained,

After completing the communication, she acknowledged the Ensign,

“Ensign Tak, I would be most interested in your interpretations of what we find, given your expertise.”

Kaden was very interested in what the ensign might be able to do with this language. Kaden assumed it would be very low level communication of some sort, so having someone that might be able to understand would be ideal. Kaden waited to hear what the captain said about doing this.

“I’d imagine they’d let us know that we’re next, if they ever get out of the forcefield,” Gavin laughed. If they were expecting low levels of communication, the CMO didn’t expect anything more than short phrases or even words that the officers might not immediately understand.

“Are we sure the computer will be able to translate even small phrases?” Kyle asked, genuinely curious.

Kaden smiled and laughed and responded to Kyle, “I am not sure but I do not see how it will not hurt to try. I believe if we do not try, we will never know.” He knew about the curiosity but was not ever 100% sure of things such as this.

“There is no guarantee we will be able to translate phrases, but phrases are not needed for communication. Ant pheromones, for example–” Tak began to infodump, but they were stopped by a new arrival into the Lab.

Just a moment after the chief engineer was speaking, there was a brief interruption in the isolation field around the lab and the door opened with their Romulan CO entering escorted by another NE security officer to took station nearby. Andone looked around at those assembled then came up to look at the sample lab where the enhanced rat seeing her approach seemed to look her over. A twitch of its face and squeak of its mouth in some way seemed to mimic communication but only mouse squeaks came out. Conversely the computer’s scans of the comm link showed information was transferrin between the mouse and the metal shard and back. So they were obviously talking about the ‘new arrival’.

”..Bring me up to speed then..” She said to those present.

Tak’s whiskers twitched, and they looked to T’Mor, expecting that their DH would do most of the talking. If prompted, they would happily contribute. Instead, they turned to examine the mouse and the scans, examining the records of the output. If it was a language with actual words or if it was a concept-language, as long as it wasn’t pure code, they could probably figure out some pretty good details, given time and space to work on the problem. Tak was skilled at languages - unlike most of the Galdori serving in Starfleet, they had actually learned Federation Standard and didn’t depend on the Universal Translator to transmit their meaning. Their focus didn’t mean they had tuned out the conversation between the CO and the other Officers, just that they thought their time would be better spent working on a solution rather than silently listening to a recap.

‘Over to you lad,’ Kyle nodded to Buchanom.

Lt. j.g. T’Mor stood up at attention, both as a sign of respect and a projection of confidence.

“Commander,” she acknowledged, though not quite sure what to say or how to begin,

“We have been studying how the nanites have been interacting with various biological samples. The results have been… interesting to say the least. For example, when presented with inert biological matter, the nanites are active, but do not significantly effect the sample. However, when exposed to a more complex lifeform…” T’Mor gestured slightly toward the mouse,

“They seem to enhance what is already present in the lifeform. The nanites from the initial sample were transmitted to the mouse, and by all appearances, the mouse is now in better condition than it was before. What is more, the nanites in the initial sample are still in communication with those in the other. It is possible we can intercept the signal they are using to communicate. It is also likely we might be able to disrupt it, or send our own communication through the signal. However exact nature the exact nature of what we would be receiving, whether it is language or some other form of communication, is unknown.”

“It’s also unknown if we’re able to remove the nanites once they’ve infiltrated their host, Captain,” The Chief Medical Officer added at the last moment. Starfleet had numerous records of their medical providers being able to remove Borg nanites or implants from their host, but it would be a shot in the dark with these, since they were much smaller.
