Jonathon DeLaney’s brow furrowed in concentration as he stood amidst the scattered components of the replicator in his quarters aboard the USS Ark Angel. With the precision honed through years of engineering expertise, he meticulously examined each circuit and interface, driven by an unwavering determination to uncover the root cause of the malfunction. The replicator had been a source of frustration for Jonathon, consistently failing to meet his exacting standards. While Starfleet regulations deemed an 80% match acceptable, Jonathon demanded nothing less than perfection—an 89.9% match was his standard, and anything less was simply unacceptable.
=^= “Johnathon DeLaney, Oncoming Chief Engineer USS Ark Angel, a routine crew medical survey has been conducted by the automated ship’s computer system. You are overdue for your onboarding medical check-in. A notification has been sent to the ship’son duty medical officer and Executive Officer,” =^= the ship’s computer interjected, interrupting Jonathon’s focus.
“Computer, I haven’t even started my assignment yet,” Jonathon argued in a gruff tone, his frustration evident.
=^= “Johnathon DeLaney, Oncoming Chief Engineer, started his assignment aboard the USS Ark Angel Stardate 77461.8 at 1600 hours following entrance into Main Engineering. A notification has been sent to the ship’s on duty medical officer and Executive Officer,” =^= the computer countered, its automated response unwavering.
Faced with the persistence of the ship’s systems, Jonathon issued a command with a sense of authority. “Computer, set ‘do not disturb,’ Delaney-Alpha-6-7-8-Zeta,” he instructed, his tone leaving no room for argument. He knew he’d have to upload his personal commands later, commands that would restrict access and override to his quarters, office, and Main Engineering—a preemptive measure to keep out any brass from sticking their noses where they didn’t belong.

USS Ark AngelDespite the Chief Engineer’s best attempts to not be disturbed, this would be tested when Doctor Buckingham arrived at the door to his quarters and rang the chime. Thomas exhaled slightly as he waited for an answer. He wasn’t accustomed to having to retrieve people to have there boarding check-in performed. To say that he was less than impressed was an understatement. Nonetheless, he tried to not let this cloud his judgement - first impressions and all that… The last thing he wanted was to get off on the wrong foot with the new Engineering Chief. He would just have to be diplomatic about this situation, he told himself.
Ensign Thomas Buckingham
Medical OfficerAs the chime echoed through Jonathon’s quarters, breaking the silence that had enveloped him in his relentless pursuit of perfection, he couldn’t help but inwardly curse the interruption. With a heavy sigh, he set aside the tools he had been using to tinker with the replicator and made his way to the door. “Go away,” Jonathon grunted, his voice tinged with irritation as he stood at the threshold of his quarters the door still closed.
Buckingham sighed and rang the chime again.
“I’m busy,” he added curtly. Jonathon did not attempt to hide his annoyance, his focus already drifting back to the scattered components of the replicator waiting for his attention. “These replicators won’t fix themselves and I’m off duty!”
John
The Chief
USS Ark AngelUnperturbed by the lack of a personal response Buckingham rang the chime yet again. He wouldn’t be put off so easily. He was determined to get an answer, even if it meant physically knocking on the door.
Ensign Thomas Buckingham
Medical OfficerWith another heavy sigh, Jonathon reluctantly made his way to the door, his annoyance palpable. “My chime works perfectly fine, Doctor,” he stated dryly as he activated the door panel, allowing it to slide open with a soft hiss. As Doctor Buckingham stood before him, Jonathon couldn’t help but offer a wry smirk. “I appreciate your rigorous testing of the ship’s systems,” he remarked, his tone laced with sarcasm. “But I’m afraid there’s nothing wrong with my door.”

USS Ark AngelBuckingham smiled as the door opened. “Forgive me, Sir. I’m sure you can see my concern with the door bell, in that when it rings, the person on the other side usually makes an effort to answer it.” Thomas returned the wry smirk. Thomas wouldn’t push this flippant interaction any further. It was one thing to return the Sarcasm, but it was quite another to be insubordinate.
“Actually, Sir, my reason for this house call today is that you’ve failed to report for your on-boarding Medical Check-in. We can complete it here, in your quarters, or if you’d prefer, you can accompany to Sick Bay so we can get it out of the way. That way, I shan’t have to test you doorbell anymore in the future”. He joked, trying to make light of the situation.Ensign Thomas Buckingham
Medical OfficerJohn regarded Doctor Buckingham with a raised eyebrow, the hint of a smirk playing at the corners of his lips. “Fair point, Doctor,” he conceded, his tone lightening slightly despite himself. he wouldn’t admit it but this Ensign had spunk, and for that, he liked him.. a little bit, enough to tolerate atleast. “I’ll make a mental note to be more prompt in my responses to doorbells in the future.”
He stepped aside, gesturing for the doctor to enter his quarters. “Come on in, but be quick about it,” John added with a nod toward the scattered components of the replicator. “I’ve got a few repairs to finish up, and I’d rather not have any… mishaps while you’re here.”

USS Ark Angel“Thank you” Buckingham said as he entered the quarters, stepping carefully over the dismantled machinery. “Don’t worry, we’ll keep this brief, I can see that you’re busy.” Buckingham with drew his Tricorder from it’s holster on his waist, but kept it closed for the moment.
“Obviously I’ll run a quick scan of you, but is there anything I need to know, or any changes since your last visit to a Sickbay?” He asked, his tone strictly professional.Ensign Thomas Buckingham
Medical OfficerAs Buckingham withdrew his Tricorder, John’s gaze followed the movement, his expression becoming more guarded. “No changes since my unnecessary I intrusion of personal space,” he replied evenly, his voice betraying none of the discomfort he felt at being subjected to yet another medical examination. “Just the usual aches and pains that come with the territory.”
He shifted slightly, resisting the urge to fidget under Buckingham’s scrutiny. “With all these medical pokes and prods it’s a wonder we get any actual work done, every new posting every month every quarterly every year, what a waste of time” he continued.

USS Ark AngelBuckingham stopped a moment and glared at the Lieutenant “I’ll be sure to register the same complaint the next time a system is taken Offline for routine maintenance.” Buckingham retorted sharply. The Chief’s less than polite nature was beginning to grate against him. He opened the tricorder and began scanning.
The scan would read that John had perfect health not near perfect but perfect, not even so much as a molecule out of place but perfect health, which in itself was… unusual if someone was to look at the data in any greater detail than a cursory scan.
Tom remained completely silent as he carried out his task.
Ensign Thomas Buckingham
Medical OfficerThe tricorder beeped to signal the ending of the scan. “See, all good now Doctor is there anything else?” John looked at him expectedly.

Buckingham furrowed his brow as the results came in. He hummed quietly in curiosity. “Nope, I think that will be everything… for now.” Buckingham said, an air of uncertainty crossed his voice.
“You’re A-1, fit for duty!” He declared. “Welcome aboard, Lieutenant”. Buckingham spoke warmly, but rigidly.
