It seems the earlier comment about using some form of binary to communicate would be in order and correct. Meanwhile the nanite enhanced mouse remained still looking around now and then to those observing it with an unusual twinkle of intelligence in its eyes.

Kaden thought for a minute and responded to the computer =/\=I am not sure if we need to open a communication signal but is there a way to interrupt the communication between the nanites since we know the range to listen and might be able to put the communication together in an output we could interrupt into Federation Standard? I am not sure we are ready to openly communicate but getting some data would be ideal.=/\= Kaden then waited for a response from the computer. He was very curious of how the nanites are communicating and what might be involved in their communication. He thought this might be a way to monitor how they interact and how they might behave based on different or more advanced creatures, such as the way they acted in the cow vs how they acted in the wolves. It seems depending on the instinct of the creature, effect the way the nanites response, at least from what had been observed.

Subspace carrier bands while not causing direct interruption would likely create ‘signal noise’ to prevent any meaningful communication between linked units. T’Mor raised her eyebrows slightly, showing a hint of curiosity,

“Are you suggesting their communication could be complex enough that it can be translated?”

Similar attempts have been made with botanical lifeforms before. In her research, such attempts were often unsuccessful, except in the extremely rare cases of otherwise obviously sapient lifeforms. But these were something different, so perhaps it could work.

Kaden looked at T’Mor and responded, “Maybe not something we can understand but maybe something which can be interrupted by the computer. It is probably not high enough function for our type of language but maybe the computer can do something roughly on what might be trying to be communicated or provide a way to re-program or directly interact with the nanites based on what we think we want them to do vs what they are doing and what the computer can put forth. Just something I would like to try at this point.” He then smiled and hoped he did not sound totally crazy with this.

“I would imagine if the nanites were self-functioning with their own, language, then we’d be attempting first contact,” Doctor Stacey stated to the team. “Wouldn’t we need the CO’s approval?” The CMO asked. Gavin didn’t know if the CO would want to miss this opportunity, but with things how they are on the ground, he wasn’t sure if she’d want to make it a priority to attend.

“I believe it’s reasonable to at least inform them,” T’Mor responded, “It is protocol, if we believe we have contacted a unique, sentient lifeform.”

Though she didn’t seem to eager to be the one to inform the CO, she reminded herself as Acting Cheif Science Officer, it was in her right to do so.

She tapped her combage, =^= Commodore Andone, this is Lieutenant T’Mor, Science Officer. We have been studying the nanites and have found suggestions of complex, possibly intelligent commutation. How should we proceed? =^=

Your last update implied you were going to use some other biological means to test their interactions beyond a simple lab sample. =/\= She said.

Tak stepped forward slightly, looking towards the Science Chief. “I may have some way of contributing…” they spoke, waiting for attention to turn towards them before continuing, “My specialty is in eusocial animal species, particularly in studying their “languages,” how they communicate with one another. If we can tap into this frequency to listen to it, I can translate it. Even if its not a language in the Sapient sense, it might still be a communication we can understand, and even change. That doesn’t necessarily mean these nanites are intelligent though, it could be the same level of communication as bee dances, ant scent trails, or tumpuk chromatophores.”

After completing the communication, she acknowledged the Ensign,

“Ensign Tak, I would be most interested in your interpretations of what we find, given your expertise.”

Kaden was very interested in what the ensign might be able to do with this language. Kaden assumed it would be very low level communication of some sort, so having someone that might be able to understand would be ideal. Kaden waited to hear what the captain said about doing this.

“I’d imagine they’d let us know that we’re next, if they ever get out of the forcefield,” Gavin laughed. If they were expecting low levels of communication, the CMO didn’t expect anything more than short phrases or even words that the officers might not immediately understand.
