As Jonathon DeLaney ventured deeper into the recesses of the Ark Angel’s Main Engineering, his keen eyes swept over the array of consoles and displays, absorbing the data streaming across the screens with a critical eye. Despite the meticulous adherence to Starfleet regulations evident in the readings before him, there was a distinct lack of character emanating from the ship’s mechanical heart. With a furrowed brow, Jonathon muttered under his breath, his voice barely audible amidst the hum of machinery. “Standard readings, within Starfleet parameters,” he remarked to himself, his tone tinged with disappointment.
As he continued his exploration, he couldn’t shake the feeling of detachment that pervaded the chamber. The sterile efficiency of the ship’s systems left him yearning for something more, something that spoke to the soul of the vessel.
With a determined set to his jaw, Jonathon resolved to uncover the hidden depths lurking beneath the surface of the Ark Angel. For him, a starship was more than just a collection of circuits and conduits—it was a living, breathing entity with a personality all its own. And it was his mission to breathe life into the mechanical behemoth before him, infusing it with the spirit and vitality it so sorely lacked.
As he navigated through Main Engineering, Jonathon’s gaze fell upon another engineer. “Excuse me Engineer,” Jonathon began, his tone betraying a hint of frustration, “I couldn’t help but notice that the Ark Angel seems… standard, for lack of a better term. It’s all within Starfleet regulations, of course, but it feels… devoid of personality. Do you know why that might be?” He hasn’t seen the other engineers rank as he was not facing him.

Incoming Chief Engineer Officer
USS Ark AngelKaden spun around a little startled. He was in the middle of doing something and was involved and got too involved. He then said, “Hi Lt, you must be the new chief coming in. I am Kaden Buchanan. It might be a little standard but I have only been here a few months. I believe you are my replacement which Star-fleet has sent. I look forward to handing the ship over to you prior to leaving. Have you been able to check in with medical and the consular?” He was interested how the new chief was going to work out and handling over the reins would be new for him. Normally he had just been removed without notification and had to leave a fire for the new incoming chief.

Outgoing Chief Engineering OfficerJohn’s expression remained stoic as he nonchalantly shrugged. “Nah, what have I got time to waste on being poked and prodded by them academics? I know I feel good and my head is screwed on right, don’t need them telling me otherwise,” he self-proclaimed.
His tone carried a hint of defiance, a reflection of his independent spirit and disdain for bureaucracy. “Only a few months, eh?” he remarked, a wry smile playing at the corners of his lips. “What did you do wrong to get shipped off so soon?” The words were delivered with a sardonic edge, revealing John’s skepticism toward the conventionalities of Starfleet protocol.

The Chief
USS Ark AngelKaden looked at John with an interesting look. He was a little confused on why a question like this would be asked. He then responded, “I do not believe this is related to doing anything incorrectly. I have some family matters needing to be taken care of and I did not want to leave the chief position up in the air for the Ark Angel.” He was not worried he did anything wrong to be removed from the Chief position.

Outgoing Chief Engineering OfficerJohn’s expression remained stoic as he absorbed Kaden’s response, a flicker of understanding crossing his features. Family matters—another complication that John had learned to steer clear of over the years.
“Ah, family,” John mused, his tone tinged with a hint of bitterness. “Always a tangled web of complications, isn’t it?, Can’t say I blame you for wanting to avoid leaving the chief position in limbo,” he remarked, his voice betraying a rare moment of empathy. “Someone’s got to keep the gears turning, after all.”
For John, the predictability of machines was a welcome respite from the unpredictable nature of human interaction. In the world of circuits and conduits, there were no hidden agendas or familial obligations—just pure, unadulterated logic. As he returned his focus to the task at hand, John couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the uncomplicated simplicity of the mechanical world that he called home.
“So is there anything I need to know?” He asked finally.

USS Ark AngelKaden laughed at this question and then responded, “Everything is within spec as far as I can see. I have not had time to go through everything and work to get things working better than what is required. It was on my to do but that got cut short. ” He needed to take care of things and wanted to get things handed over so he could get to his family but he did not want to leave the Ark Angel in bad shape when he left. He was happy he was getting to chat with the new chief before heading out. He waited to see if John had any additional questions.

Seemingly satisfied at the other Engineers response “And the department itself? What about the crew?” He asked rather pointedly before adding, “Who do you think is up to scratch?”
