[snip]“Ensign Tak,” T’Mor said, sounding only slightly like a commanding officer, “Could you acquire our specimen and assist me in preforming a brief inspection before the test? We should establish a baseline so we can better compare the effects of the nanite exposure.”

“Reckon we should be in EV suits for this?” Kyle asked, trying to mask her nerves.
-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-
EV Suits would probably be pointless either way if the nanites escaped, they would easily break down and filter through the suit like they had seen with the metal sample.
Once Tak would bring over the white mouse named ‘Poopsie’ by the NE medical staff the mouse was shown to be in excellent health, though a tad on the ‘overweight’ side for its species probably due to NEs overfeeding it or spoiling it. With a baseline established they would be as ready as they could to insert the mouse into the containment area.

Tak retrieved the mouse, established baseline, and placed it in the transfer container. “Sorry, little dude,” they muttered, watching as it entered the containment area.
Kaden was glad it was said the EV suits would be a waste. He knew the technology would not be blocked by the EV suit. They would have had to find some sort of body armor to cover that would not allow the device inside. He was hoping they could find a ton of data based on these experiments. He was curious to see how the science department was going to move forward with this. Kaden was simply here to observe the data and record all the needed information. He was ready for the next move.

“I have life signs and other bio-data currently running on the monitor,” Doctor Stacey said once the mouse was released into the containment area. “We’ll be able to see what happens in real-time.” The Doctor added. Gavin hoped for the sake of the team that the nanites refrained from creating a monster out of the mouse.

“Here we go…” Tak found a stool and climbed atop it so they could see the results.

Kaden looked over at the mouse to see what was happening. He wanted to make sure what he saw from an engineering standpoint when the biosigns changed when the material was added to the mouse. He was hoping the mouse wouldn’t go totally crazy when the external material was added. He was afraid of the mouse running around but based on what he knew from the cow, he was not worried about the matter to take over to cause the mouse to do crazy things.

“Lieutenant Anders,” T’Mor said, eyes fixated on the chamber, “Please stand by, and be prepared to neutralize the subject if the situation escalates.”
There was the smallest quiver of anxiety in her voice as she made the request. As if it was more of a reminder to herself than to Anders that the situation should remain under their control.

The CMO continued to monitor the mouse’s life and bio signs to see the effect of the nanites on its system. Gavin thought that by capturing the data, T’Mor would be able to stop the nanites frombeing able to create more havoc on the colony.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Gavin Stacey Chief Medical Officer
Kaden liked how this was going to be covered. Getting this data was hopefully going to be helpful for the planet. He did not want to end up with the same situation as previously on the planet side with the nanites.

Turning to T’Mor with a slight grin, he said “Don’t worry lass, I’ve had my phaser on standby the past ten minutes.”
-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-
As Poopsie was inserted into the holding area, at first there did not seem to be any reaction by the subatomically sized nanites. Then as Poopsie moved and sniffed at the metal they made their move. Though visually they could not see it with their naked eyes. On the subatomic scans the nanites extended tendrils that latched onto Poopsies’ nose, then these tendrils moved up the nasal passages at lightening speed, tinier tendrils soon splitting off from the main branch to spread out through the mouse’s brain stem and nervous system. The only visual evidence of all this was a slight tremor through the mouse’s body and a sudden flight/fight response through its body to the sudden foreign intruder. But without 5 seconds total the nanites numbering about 5 thousand some in total were spread out and linked into the mouse’s system and had assumed full control. The heart rate rose to a more efficent beating level, and the extra fat was soon energized and focused into its metabolism for productive purposes. Medical scans showed the intelligence output of the mouse’s brain shot up almost 200% over its baseline. All this took place within just over 65 seconds. The main metal shard showed a sub atomic shrinkage with the loss of their invasion of the mouse. After a full minute and a half they then saw what might be considered ‘unneeded/extra’ nanites exit the mouse’s nose again rejoining the main shard, in total 332 such extras left.
Enhanced Poopsie looked about its eyes much brighter and intelligent then it had been less then two minutes prior. It sniffed and eventually poked at the forcefield, wincing at the slight shock and moving back, but then cautiously tested its boundaries. By investigating the sample table. It dried to scratch and paw at the metal to dig, but that too failed. After a full five minutes now enhanced Poopsie came to sit to the left of the metal shard, staring up at the observing personnel. The last thing their scans were able to pick up was a definable connection between the nanites in the mouse and those still on the shard.

“That’s curious,” T’Mor mumbled, “There appears to be some sort of remaining connection between the nanites, even when occupying different hosts.”
She turned over to the engineer, “Can we detect if, and if so, how the nanites are communicating?”
If they could remain connected and communicate between hosts, that held additional ramifications. It could indicate that they were not simply dealing with enhanced organisms, but a network of advanced organisms that could share information. Possibly even pool knowledge. One could also assume that their communication could be disrupted, which might be a useful strategy for subduing them if the need arises.
