As Katie stared at the two tricorders, a thought popped into her head and she was appalled at the fact she had completely missed it. The Synthesis tricorder was an antique. If everything else was as old as this tricorder…

“Miz’uiki, may I have a word with you,” Katie said with a quick glance at the Synthesis Chief Engineer, “in private?”

The Synthesis Chief Engineer excused himself and stepped away. Katie handed the Synthesis Tricorder to Miz’Uki.

“Tricorders of this class haven’t been used in Starfleet in over a hundred years. There shouldn’t be any of these outside of museums much less on active Starships,” Katie said. She took a deep breath and looked over in the direction of the Synthesis Chief Engineer. “I don’t know how this ship got here but if it somehow gets back to its own time with knowledge of what will be their future… I mean we shouldn’t even be letting them see our equipment or us for that matter… I mean were the Caitans part of the Federation then? Okay. Okay. None of my business. Back on target. This anomaly I detected is definitely organic but I can’t tell if it is alive or not. It simply appeared and disappeared as though it were phasing into and out of our time frame.”

As Katie and Miz’uki conversed, it was obvious the Synthesis Chief Engineer was not going to sit idly by while semi-unknown people whispered about his engine room. So he came over after a monet or two. “..Look I don’t mean to be nosy or nothing. What you two folks whisper about in your own time and places is your own business. But forgive me for being blunt, but this is my engine room and the Captain implied whatever you were doing here was or is important for our safety. So if there is something going on I should be aware of from you strangers I think I deserve to hear about it!” He said with a hint of impatience and annoyance at being kept out of the loop.

“My apologies, sir. If you’ll take a look at this for a minute,’ Katie said. She moved to the analysis console and quickly called up the display of her tricorder readings. The disgruntled chief engineer stood next to her. The display showed an oddly coloured blotch on the cooling pipe. “This is a recording of a scan I made just a few minutes ago. And this is the same recording played at one tenth speed.”

The blotch suddenly appeared and after a few seconds of the playback disappeared as quickly as it appeared. There was no detectable movement.

“What is it?” the Chief Engineer said.

“I don’t know, sir, and I don’t know whether it represents a danger to your ship or not,” Katie said. She adjusted the display to show the blotch again and then called up a portion of the analysis. Katie pointed at one cluster of data on the screen. “All I can really tell you is that it is organic in nature and that once it has vanished there is no trace of organic material remaining.”

“Hmm. I don’t understand why our instruments didn’t detect this.”

“I can only theorize about that and, again with my apologies, I was consulting with my own chief engineer. I’m more familiar with his knowledge and skills.”

“Theorize, then.”

“The blotch is organic and may not be limited to exterior surfaces. Or engineering equipment,” Katie said. She glanced back at Miz’uki, and took a deep breath. She had jumped into the deep end and there was no point in stopping now. “It is possible that other systems on the ship are also impacted including your instruments. And possibly the ship’s personnel.”

OOC: Nice post just one tiny request, please hold off on replying for npcs that i was/am controlling if you dont mind :) in this case its ok you basically posted what I would have had them say, but in some other cases or reasons/plot they could do or say something else. For now i’ll leave this to Kirt to reply as a follow up
