Katie blinked twice as she stared at the 3” pipe waiting for the slime to not reappear, which it didn’t. Had she actually seen something unusual? She dialed the playback function on her tricorder back one minute and watched the readings carefully. Clearly something had been there and now there was nothing. She dialed the tricorder back again and reduced the playback speed by a factor of ten. Something was there. It hadn’t moved and it didn’t shrink at least not at this playback speed. In a tenth of a second it vanished. After running a diagnostic on the tricorder, which showed the tricorder to be functioning correctly, she scanned the other piping, conduits and general surfaces in the area, none of which showed any evidence of the slime having ever been there.

“So. The only evidence that can be analyzed is this recording of tricorder scans,” Katie said with a frown. She turned and headed back to where Miz’uki was working. This was going to need some more heavy duty analytic equipment and probably more experience than she had to determine what was happening.”

“Miz’uki was using a WRT and she came over to see what Katie had found “What did you find Ensign?” she purred her tail swishing like a cat on the prowl she hoped that the Synth crew would just let them do their thing and not ask too many questions of them considering they had to respect the Temporal Prime Directive

“I spotted a transitory… splotch on one of the piping systems. One moment it was there and the next it was gone,” Katie said. She held up the tricorder so that Miz’uki could see the display. “The tricorder caught the entire thing. Playing it back at minimum speed confirmed that it hadn’t moved away… unless it was incredibly fast… or shrunk away, again unless it was incredibly fast.”

Katie played the recording three times to demonstrate the effect.

“I needed more power than the tricorder had to analyze the recording in detail,” Katie put down the tricorder and called up the main screen on the analysis station. She turned to Miz’uki. “But these results don’t make any sense to me. Nothing organic could simply appear and disappear like that, could it?”

As the two Ark Angel engineers were discussing their findings the Synthesis’s chief engineer came back over. “..Forgive me but I couldn’t help but overhear, you said you found some kind of organic ‘anomaly’ in our computer core?” he said incredulously as id disbelieving this. “..I hope you won’t mind if I come along to you checking this out? Obviously something like that should not be there!” he stated.

Katie furrowed her forehead as she compared her tricorder readings from the hydraulic systems in Engineering to the other readings from the computer core. This anomalies were essentially identical.

“What do computer core and cooling system have in common? Nothing. Nothing at all other than they are on the same ship,” Katie muttered softly. After a moment of silence, she looked up at the chief engineer of the Synthesis. Why hadn’t he detected the anomaly? The Synthesis engineers seemed perfectly competent. Presumably her scientists were as well. The anomalies in both systems had been detected by tricorders from Ark Angel. Was there something about the Synthesis tricorders that made them blind to the anomaly? There was a simple way to test that theory. “Sir. May I borrow one of your engineering tricorders?”

The chief engineer looked puzzled at the request. “Of course.”
