”..Tel’eck! Ensign Fayth, the sandwiches are ready.” Drudoc called from the other room.

”..Coming Mom!” Tel’eck replied.

Sharah shook her head with a smile. The girl had a limitless amount of energy and ideas. She would have to warn Joseph about the children that run through the jeffries tubes. She’d thought the aCSO was kidding. Apparently not. At the captain’s summons she followed Tel’eck back out to the living area and sat down at the table. “It smells wonderful. Romulan flower peppers maybe? They have a very distinctive scent.”

”..A keen nose you got, Ensign. Good to hear my choice of spices is appreciated I hope?” Drudoc said setting the now cool chicken salad sandwiches down on a plate to serve each person. A side of freshly fried potato chips was also evident slightly warm and seasoned yet. “..Please take your seats, I’m sure everyone is hungry.” She commented.

”..Woo! Food.” Tel’eck whooped in a happy tone grinning. “..Smells great Mom. Thanks.” She said.

Sharah grinned over Tel’eck’s enthusiasm. “Thank you, captain. Yes it is. I’m a dismal cook so I won’t tell you how bad my only attempt to use the peppers went. My assistants on Earth tried to teach me, but I never got farther than making pancakes. Yanni was very disappointed in my lack of progress.” Sharah grins just a little. She waits to see if they offer any type of thanks. At home they would ring a gong, and though Sharah did, she only did it before and after a meal. It was impractical, to her, to try and ring the whole time while she chewed her food. That habit had been over exaggerated by certain families who tried to one-up each other. She took a bite of the sandwhich, savoring the flavors. It was robust and heady and very very good. When she had finished the bite, she commented genuinely, “This is very good, Captain. Thank you.”

Tel’eck and Drudoc didn’t pause for any kind of prayer before the meal. The sandwiches were sweet and spicy yet cool to the taste. The fried chips were crisp and salt and tangy. “..My younger sister Tel’shen makes amazing pancakes! I’d love to try yours sometime if you’re up to it, as I am sure Tel’eck.” Drudoc said. After taking a few bites of the sandwich and chips.

”..I love chocolate chip pancakes!” Tel’eck chimed in. Taking a few bites of the chips herself.

Sharah smiled around a mouthful of chips. She finished and took a sip of water. “I’d love to make them for you. But according to Joseph my French toast is better than my pancakes.”

”..So Ensign, tell me about your project from the Academy on the Challenger about the away team additions and scan adjustments?” Drudoc asked.

Sharah straightened up in her seat and took a sip of her drink gathering her thoughts. And she begins to talk, and Drudoc may decide that she regrets it as Sharah tends to speed talk when she’s passionate about a topic. “So our away teams go on these missions and don’t have medical personnel with them. They get hurt and cut off from aid. So I’ve written a program that fits on a scientific tricorder and will scan for compounds in common medications. All medications actually come from either mineral resources in the environment or from plants. When you pull up the program you decide what type of medication you need and then it will scan for chemical and mineral compounds in the surrounding environment. Then it will tell you how to make the medication and administer it. For example:

“For any of these medicines the scientific tricorder can be used to search the surrounding area by searching for chemical or mineral composition. These compositions may be found in mineral deposits or plant life depending on the ecosystem of the area. Many of these plants look similar from planet to planet but not exactly alike. So it’s important that the officer using it does not get caught up in the most common form listed in the database.

“The scientific tricorder can be used to determine the ambient temperature of an object, in this case, a person. If the temperature is elevated an infection is likely. If there is a scratch or puncture an infection is possible. An antibiotic would need to be found: The most common nature-based antibiotic is a local form of Earth’s St. John’s Wort: It is a yellow/orange star shaped flower. The whole part of the flower should be ground down. At this point it should be mixed with hot water to make a paste for a hot compress, or it can be mixed with honey to make a salve. The paste or salve should be placed over the scratch or puncture. If there is a deep open wound, you would not place the mixture in the wound but around the edges. If there is no wound for entry of the infection then it could have been ingested or inhaled. In that case the flowers can be put into a tea.

“If the patient has an open wound or has an internal injury (such as a sprain, break, etc.) something for pain may be necessary. There are nature-based options for anti-inflammatories as well. They will help reduce the swelling and strain on the area. It is not a narcotic pain relief. The most common (with variants across the quadrant) is Earth’s Comfrey: a small flower with multiple purple buds that appear to weep (or hang down). You use the flower by crushing it and mixing with hot water to make a hot compress. This can only be used as a compress and should not be ingested. Replace the compress as it cools. The heat can be maintained longer if the compress is wrapped in at least 2 layers of cloth.

“If the patient is agitated, has difficulty breathing, or appears to be going into early stages of shock, but not already in shock, a mild sedative can be used to keep them calm. The most common found is Earth’s Chamomile. This is a small flower with white petals around a yellow center. Put the whole flower into boiling water and have the patient drink it as a tea. 2 cups maximum the first time and then every hour as needed to help.

“I ran into trouble at first because I assumed that the away team would just have the materials needed to heat and mix the compounds. So I had to work that into the program as well. Giving ways to make the medicines without access to lab materials. The first being something to contain the mixture. A bowl can be made out of clay and then hardened in a fire, or by phaser (set to the lowest setting) to bake it. If clay is not to be found, a crude bowl can be cut out of stone by using a phaser set to a very narrow beam and on the lowest setting possible that will cut the rock. To heat the water for tea or compress a phaser (set to the lowest possible setting) can be used to heat the rock or clay bowl. Heating should be done slowly to ensure that the mixtures are not burned or destroyed.

Of course while I was on Earth we added many more possibilities to the file, but those are the three most common used to treat wounds and injuries from away teams. The mortality rate for away team members that get injured without access to medical care is really high, and so this gives them a better chance of survival until a medical team can arrive.” Sharah stops talking, and realizes the captain was probably just being polite and she just went off on a lecture to her Captain. Forcing herself not show it, Sharah was very embarrassed. She went back to eating her sandwhich.
