Sharah led them over to a very large bed, big enough for a small ball field. There were trees, shrubs, rock formations, plenty of places to hide and climb. “Anywhere in this bed is free for you to play. As rough as you want. Here, and only here it’s okay to rip the plants up as you play. They are coming up anyway for replanting. So the harder you play, the more you help, and more importantly, nothing here can hurt you. Okay?” Sharah asked. She had loved playing outside when she was younger, and she was glad there was a place like this on board for the children, but she wanted them to be safe. She started to turn away, “Oh, Tel’eck, you aren’t supposed to be in school or somewhere else are you? I don’t want to have to fend of security for you.” She grinned at the girls and left them to play.

”..Nu uh! Sarah and I are out of class till 0800 tomorrow! We got our work done early and each got 100% to boot!” She said proudly.

Sharah smiled, “That’s good work, girls. So how about you two do your laser tag over here. When I’m done with the doctor, maybe you can help me with a special project?”

“So true, my brother and I spent most of our childhood outdoors. You can be sure I will be back.” She grinned and her eyes sparkled, “And if your Joseph thinks talking to plants is funny he should meet my brother and his partner, Lane, they talk to their fabrics!” Hayley took a moment to put her serious face back on. “I like your thought processes, and your ability to think and plan ahead. A ship like this needs that. I’m going to enjoy working with you and I hope we can be friends apart from work as well.” Hayley had a hopeful look on her face as she said this. She generally didn’t make friends too easily. Her direct manner, while it benefited her professionally, often wasn’t so helpful socially. “I should head back to Sickbay 1. I’ve been putting off some admin work and it probably can’t wait too much longer.”

Sharah chuckled softly. “I’m going to enjoy working with you as well. I’ll try to get some other samples made for you by the end of the week and I’ll drop them off.” Sharah didn’t make friends easily either. Like most Betazoids she was direct when she talked and didn’t tell the petty lies that most non-telepaths did out of politeness. She’d learned to keep comments to herself, and when it came to her gift she had learned to redirect questions, which always made her feel guilty. The idea of having Hayley for a friend made her smile. “I’d like that. Maybe some time after shift.” She nodded, the paper work was never ending. “I understand. I still have to finish up here and go check the other two arboretums today. I’m glad you stopped by. Let me know if you think of anything you may need or even want.”

After Hayley left, Sharah turned back down another path to see what Tel’eck and her friend were up to. She walked over to the large flower bed first hoping the girls were still where she left them, and then hoping that they had tore up the flower bed some in the game of laser tag. “Are you girls still shooting each other?”

When Fayth rounded the corner to where the girls had been she found both were locked in a game of tug of war it seems now using some kind of rope they found from who knows where. Tel’eck it seemed with her half Romulan heritage and likely more physically active build was slowly but surely winning out over her friend who was despite the loss coming putting up a mighty effort to win!

Fayth leaned against the trunk of one of the trees in the large arboretum and watched. She looked carefully at the rope to ensure it wasn’t a vine they shouldn’t be touching, and satisfied it was safe, she watched the girls in their game. A small smile crossed her face. Tel’eck was obviously stronger and was giving the contest her full effort. Her friend was as well. Even though the other girl knew she wasn’t going to win, she put her full effort in and had a determination that Sharah recognized. Sharah was very similar. Adversity only made her try harder. She’d never engaged in games like this as a child. Her only friend had been her brother, who 5 years older, was always stronger than her. She smiled watching the girls, so this is what a normal childhood looks like. She waited for the girls to finish their game and then walked over to them. “I could use your expert opinion on something, if you’d like to help me. We’ll need to go to the arboretum on deck 26 though.” Her goal was to turn the smaller arboretum into something the schools could safely use without worry of dangerous plants. And a place that the children could literally go wild in. Places to climb, crawl, hide, run, jump, etc. And who better to advise her than the children on board.
