As some of you will have seen on social media, and now on the MOTD, we’re starting a book club!

The plan is to read the same book together, with a new book each month. For a period of about 2 or 3 weeks, we’ll discuss the book we’ve just read. This does mean that one discussion will overlap the reading of the new book.

After polling people on themes, we’re narrowed it down to Mixed Bag: Sci-fi & Fantasy so we’ll alternate between the two each month.

I’m collecting a list of possible books in both genres. If you have a favourite, or one you’d love to read and haven’t, please reply and suggest it. All I ask is that they are appropriate for out 13+ rating and if it’s a series, it’s the first book.

I have a few ideas! :)

“Mortal Engines” by Phillip Reeve (Its the first of a series of 4. A movie is also coming out in December for it directed by Peter Jackson)
“Dreamlander” by KM Weiland
Anything by Stephen Lawhead

Now, I know that Fantasy has a lot of specific sub-genres and probably one of my favorite authors (K.M. Weiland) tries to touch on some of those subgenres.

“Storming” which is a dieselpunk novel (think fantasical aviatior story in the 1920s)
“Wayfarer” which is a gaslamp fantasy (comes out some time this year)
And she’s also working on a sequel to “Dreamlander” that looks like it could come out next year maybe?

Just some ideas! Looking forward to what’s in store!

Most of my reading preferences are probably not 13+ material, as they are either read with my nephews (1.5 and 5 year olds) for work (anyone want to read about lean startups or gaining traction for lean startups?) or my own reading (which are probably for an older audience group).

Having said that, I did read and enjoy the Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus etc series which are aimed more closely at that age group, the maze runner series as well, the ‘Half a King’ series by Joe Abercrombie are supposedly aimed at that age group as well, but I’m not sure on that last one.

Oh, sorry, children’s and YA novels are absolutely allowed. I more meant that it should be the same PG type rating as our boards, so nothing that breaches our TOS. But I definitely did want novels rather than smaller works of fiction (for now).
