The zoo was its usual chaotic self and it took a reminder in the form of a knocking on her lodge to pull the Beaver away from her task to attend to one that was not only more important but also fun.

“Is it time?” the Beaver asked excitedly.

“Yup!” the Quokka called out, hopping through the tall grass toward the watering hole. “Dolphin said today’s the day, he heard from the Mysterious Aquatic D…”

“You guys are late. Hop on,” said a low rumble from their left and the Rhino’s head parted the tall grass followed by the sizeable rest of him. “Let’s go, or we’ll never get good seats.”

The Rhino lumbered through the grass and up to the watering hole. The zoo was in rare form: the Zebra ate grass and looked around and simply shook his head. The Panda chewed on their imported bamboo and batted away the Raven that was obviously trying to show her ideas for a new banner. And the Wombat and Wookie held court in the corner, playing some kind of game that only they and the Tribble knew the rules of.

With the Rhino’s help, they arrived just in time to avoid the crowds. Because contrary to popular belief, the captains of the club were quite a rowdy bunch. After waiting a few minutes, the Beaver trundled up to the little stage area and surveyed those gathered. She slapped her tail on the stage a few times to gather everyone’s attention.

“Ahem! Pipe down now, we have important business to attend to,” she said seriously, waiting for the chatter to dissipate. “It has come to our attention that there is someone amongst our ranks who is guilty of excellent service and as the newest member of our group the only fitting punishment is her own name. Could the Quokka and the Rhino please bring our newest captain up.”

The Quokka nudged the Rhino and blew a smoke ring. “C’mon, send her up… That’s our cue!” He looked up at the Rhino expectantly.

The lumbering Rhino moved near the Beaver and lowered his head…

And nothing happened. No one moved, no one heard anything. Then, oddly, a small part of the Rhino’s horn moved and climbed down to the stage… and vanished.

Frowning slightly, the Beaver continued. “Ahhh, well, I’m sure she’ll appear when she’s ready. But today we were here to bestow an honour upon Miriam, our newest Commanding Officer. She is dedicated and creative, and quite often finds a way to fit in with whatever ship and story she’s a part of. For this reason we have decided that she shall be henceforth known as Chameleon.”

The Beaver peered about the stage. “Congrats, Captain Chameleon… wherever you are.”

“Welcome Chameleon!” bellowed the Rhino, and stomped his foot in excitement… and then froze.

“Oh… oh no.” and he raised his hoof and looked carefully at the bottom and then heaved a sigh of relief.

The Quokka’s eyes bulged as the Rhino stamped, and then exhaled a trail of smoke in relief.

The Beaver eyed the antics with interest. “And… on that note, Captains dismissed.”
