The Wrong Number

Someone answers their phone but the caller has the wrong number. Write a story in which the call continues rather than ends. What might the consequences be?

I’ll kick us off. ~Linds

“Hello?” a woman’s voice sounded. For some reason it made me frown.

“Is Gretchen there?”

“Sorry, there’s no one there by that name.” I looked at the number I had dialed and sure enough it was the wrong one. But the person on the other end sounded so familiar!

A long moment of silence spanned between us as I wracked my brain trying to figure out whether that voice could belong to someone I had known all too well.

“Umm, is Rosalie there?”

Silence- uncomfortable silence. “No, no one here by that name.”

“Rosalie? Please, it’s Laura. I know it’s you!”

“You’re mistaken!”

All I got after was dial tone as she hung up on me. I sat there stunned. It couldn’t be, could it? I mean, all I know is that that voice sounded like my best friend who disappeared ten years ago without a trace. Vanished, like she had never existed.

My instincts told me I was right and for better or worse, I needed to know the truth.
