Long before they became a recognized interstellar species, the ancestors of the Canidin were ordinary domestic dogs of Earth—primarily working breeds prized for loyalty, intelligence, and social bonding. Following the devastation of the Eugenics Wars and the post-atomic horrors of the 21st century, humanity entered a period of rapid reconstruction and scientific ambition.

By the early 22nd century, Mars had become one of Earth’s most important industrial and research colonies. Beneath the domed laboratories of Utopia Planitia and in hidden black-site facilities scattered across the Martian frontier, several extremist human factions operated in secrecy. One such organization, later known in recovered records as The Ascendancy Initiative, believed humanity alone deserved to inherit the stars.

To them, alien contact was inevitable—and dangerous.
They sought servants, soldiers, and laborers who would be utterly obedient to human command yet intelligent enough to function independently in hostile environments. Their chosen subjects were Earth canines.

The Martian Experiments (2142–2156)

Beginning in 2142, thousands of dogs were abducted from shelters, breeding programs, and colonial settlements. Through aggressive gene-editing, accelerated neural development, cybernetic augmentation, and skeletal restructuring, these animals were transformed over successive generations.
Their spines were altered to support upright posture. Pelvic structure widened. Forelimbs became grasping hands. Vocal cords and respiratory systems were modified for articulate speech. Most dramatically, cortical expansion increased reasoning, language retention, memory, and emotional complexity.
The results were horrifying.

Three cargo-capable interplanetary vessels escaped Mars orbit. Starfleet archives of the era misidentified them as stolen relief craft lost in deep space during wartime confusion.

Only 300 uplifted canines survived the exodus.

The refugees had no formal training in astrogation, only fragmented technical education forced upon them by their captors. Guided by instinct, stolen charts, and the determination never to be chained again, they fled beyond core human patrol zones.

They named it Lupora III—from an ancient Terran root meaning wolf.

The settlers who reached Lupora III were survivors, not yet a species. They were genetically unstable hybrids built by cruelty. Many could not reproduce naturally. Some still walked with difficulty. Others died young.
Yet the planet healed them.

Lupora III’s mild gravity, dense forests, freshwater basins, and abundant fauna allowed them to live without fear for the first time. They dismantled their ships for shelter and tools. They created communal dens rather than cities. Leadership was earned through service, not dominance.

Most importantly, they began controlled self-directed genetics using salvaged Martian databases.
