Nathan I wanted to share our thoughts about command-level mentorship for the next term. This is something separate and apart from the Academy’s specific mentorship programs for various aspects in the club (and the ongoing work taking place now and over the next term at the Academy). For this post, Nathan and I wanted to share our idea for reinforcing the mentorship between FComm, CO and XO.

At the ship command level, we have experienced COs/XOs, brand new COs/XOs, COs/XOs that could use a refresher, COs/XOs that may be facing challenges on their ships, and COs/XOs that might be surprised to learn something new about their role in STF :)

There’s usually a direct mentorship relationship between FComms and COs and XOs. However, over time these relationships need to be reinforced, newer members to the roles need a reminder about some of the institutional knowledge that comes with those roles, command-level players need a hand with some of the challenges a ship might be facing (but may not even realize the ship is facing a challenge), and so on. We think this is a good term to reinforce that mentorship - which will help with all of our ships, as well as support the next group of FComms and other club leaders.

Nathan and I envision having at least one month put aside for each fleet this term. During that month, the executive will work with the FComm to reach out to their COs and XOs, see how they are doing, and help out where we can. It could just end up being a quick check-in as those relationships already exist and the ship isn’t having any challenges. It could be giving a hand to those COs/XOs with navigating their admin menu and roster and taking advantage of the great features Exodus has. It could be a refresher for the ship on RP habits in STF (like cross-posting, etc.) so that all players are enjoying themselves. It could be checking in with them for a refresher on FCOMM and OGRE. Or something else entirely. Who knows how it will go with any individual ship? But we think having check-ins this term between the executive, the FComms and each CO and XO would be a good thing for the entire club in the long term.

To support these efforts, if possible Nathan and I would like to give executive support and coordination to having the new Library as a term priority. We should caution, though, that due to life outside of STF, the type of conversations that would normally happen over the last couple weeks to see where we are on the Library project and whether it is realistic to make it a priority for the next term have not happened yet. But if possible, we think this would be a good term for the Library project with full executive support behind it. In addition to having accessible and updated reference documents and policies all in one place, Nathan and I would also like to assist in drafting an index and/or FAQ to our bylaws and policies so that members can easily look up the information they need without having to guess which bylaw or document the information is contained in, and in what paragraph. Given my own significant experience with the club’s policies and documents, I feel this is an area I can assist with as President and Nathan and I believe this will help with supporting our command-level mentorship plan for the term.
