Starfleet Tactical Command commissioned the Empress-class Heavy Dreadnought following the collapse of several border defense grids during the post-Dominion strategic reorganization period. Starfleet identified a growing need for a dedicated fleet-engagement platform capable of withstanding prolonged heavy combat operations without relying upon support formations traditionally required by cruiser-centered battlegroups.
Unlike exploratory flagships, the Empress-class was conceived from inception as a dedicated combat vessel. While capable of limited scientific support, those functions remain subordinate to the vessel’s tactical mission profile. The design is intended to function as part of coordinated task forces and is not a replacement for traditional multi-mission starships.
