As part of our ongoing effort to streamline operations and improve member support, should STF formally merge the Academy and Personnel Departments into a single unified department?

As it stands both function separately but have overlapping responsibilities that make it almost natural for a merge.

Or would it be more effective to bring both functions into one department and allow the Director to determine where they best sit operationally?

In other words:
• If the functions themselves are not changing, does a structural merger improve clarity, efficiency, or member experience?
• Does consolidation reduce redundancy, or simply re-label existing processes?
• Would empowering a Director to align Academy (courses, mentoring, training) and Personnel (registrations, records, permissions) create better coordination and flexibility?

The goal of this discussion is to determine whether a formal merger adds tangible operational value — or whether unified oversight with structural flexibility would better serve STF and its members.

I invite everyone to participate in this discussion. Your perspectives, concerns, and suggestions are important as we consider the best structure moving forward. Open, constructive input will help ensure any decision we make reflects both operational needs and the experience of our members.

In my opinion I wouldn’t know but I would put my 2 cents in by saying that if we merged them together they’ll work better as one. But, at the same time, having the oversight with structural flexibility that would also benefit and help improve and better serve STF and it’s members both.

I think merging the two departments to slim down and become more efficient with our resources is a great idea.

I have to agree with both Chris and Scott. It honestly made sense to have a separate Academy department back in the heyday when we had four academy ships. There is certainly enough overlap that both departments have had to coordinate for quite some time; it would lead to greater efficiency, I think. :)
