Hi all,

Matt and I have been discussing an Amendment to OGRE. We want to change the training section in OGRE, specifically point two which is as follows:

The procedure for the Gamemaster Training Program is as follows:

1. The Gamemaster Trainee and Mentor pair are responsible for developing a mission plan and finding a Ship on which to train. The ship must be a Standard Roleplaying Area, not an Alternative Role Playing Area. They may request the assistance of the Gamemaster Department in this matter.

We want to change it to this:

1. The Gamemaster Trainee and Mentor pair are responsible for developing a mission plan and the Gamemaster Department will help in finding a Ship on which they can train. The GMDir is responsible for ensuring the Ship is suitable for the Trainee and the mission through consultation with the Mentor.

Due to the shortage of GMs this will enable to put suitable GMTs on alternative roleplaying environments. It is important to note that not every GMT will be placed on an ALT discretion will be used and we will only place a GMT on an Alt where we feel confident that’ll thrive.

Apologies if the wording isn’t great, I’ve been dealing with a constantly whingy 10 month old all weekend and I’m fried.

The idea for this is that we have members who have been with the club and proven that they can write and handle ships of any variety but up until this point they’d never tried GMing. These members in theory should be able to run their training period on a non-standard ship.

Having gm’d on both a standard and ALT RPG ship, I have no issue with this at all. And it will open up more avenues to bring in more desperately needed GMs.

So my opinion is biased because I am a CO of an alt ship in need of a GM. I think this is great!

But most of the current Trek shows out there are not ‘current timeline’. So new members who may decide to join and want to GM may have been drawn by the new shows and want to be part of those eras.

I’m happy you brought this up Jenn. It is my understanding that a discussion of what is “alt-rpg” is planned to kick off just as soon as everyone’s life, and I’m guessing holidays, settles down. The classification of what kind of roleplaying environments our ships are may very well change radically. We’ve future proofed the OGRE amendment proposal here by circumventing the alt versus standard ship classifications altogether.

I agree that this is a necessary change and it’s done elegantly enough. By this point, alt-rpgs aren’t necessarily a higher level of complexity than standard ships, and it makes sense to leave it to GMDir and GMM discretion anyway.
