Welcome to Exodus, everyone! We hope you have managed to find your way around the site without any issues. If you have a question about the site, check out the Primer first (which can be found here). If you still have questions, ask on the Exodus channel for Discord or send us an email. If you find a problem or a bug, click “Report an Issue” under the Resource menu at the top.
Over the next couple days, the following will be happening:
1) The last few members who have no re-registered for Exodus should be doing so.
2) Members should create their characters from before. You can do so from your Profile page. If you forgot your character name or info, ask your CO. (We also have a back up of the Master Roster from WeBBspace if there are any problems.) Please let your CO know when you have created the characters.
3) COs/XOs will be filling up their rosters with the newly created characters. COs and other members will also be posting up threads on their ships from just before we left WeBBspace. COs will hopefully have any character bios in case they a member forgot to save them.
Hope you enjoy the site! I’ll have more to say about everyone who had a hand in a few weeks. But briefly, a big thanks to:
-Joe P (who has been the lead on the Exodus project)
-TECH for all their work getting Exodus ready for the move and helping with the roll out (Joe, Thomas B, Amber DeSadier, Matt Bernardin)
-PDept for their work throughout the process (Matt Kleinman, Adam W. and the rest of the PDept staff)
-Owen Morgan for his work on getting all the MOTDs transferred and brought up to snuff for Exodus
-Lindsay Bayes and Adam W. for their work on the Exodus Primer
-All the volunteers who process all of applications for the returning members, made sure COs/XOs/GMs had admin access, and helped answer questions or troubleshoot problems (Lindsay Bayes, Adam W., James Sinclair, David Shotton, Amanda Mercer, Levon Johnson and whoever else I’ve forgotten…)Thanks everyone for your work and ongoing work with the project!
Now that I’ve had the chance to sleep since the switch, and the immediate post-release pile of work I have to do is down to a manageable level, I’d like to take this moment to express how impressed I am with how well all of you have handled this. This was the single most dramatic change the club has gone through in at least the past decade, and I know that some aspects of it were confusing or otherwise unpleasant to deal with. But you all managed to deal with it anyway, and very quickly.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the entire club carry out any single event in as well-coordinated a fashion as this migration. I haven’t looked at the statistics recently, but nearly everybody who was active before the switch is now here on the new site, and something like 78% of people did the switch within the first 24 hours. When you consider that most of the club isn’t active every single day, and the typical voter turnout in an election is something like 35% of the active membership, it’s a very impressive figure.
What makes me even more impressed by what you all did on Saturday is that the volunteer effort to coordinate this migration came together less than a full week before we did it. I actually had very little to do with organizing that, other than to give a very basic overview of what work needed to be done. Everyone did a very good job in just running with that on very short notice. It was a tremendous relief to me personally, as it let me focus on a lot of the more technical issues that needed to be resolved in that week and even on the day of the switch. So, I’d like to thank all of you for all of the work you did. Yes, even if all you did was re-register and re-create your characters; that counts as work because we all benefit from what you choose to write here. I’d like to thank all of the people Daniel mentioned as well, and I’ll be slipping him some suggestions of what to say about those people when he says those things in a few weeks.
Finally, I’d like to take a moment here and thank Daniel for everything he did this term as the President to help make this happen now. Being President is often frustrating and thankless, even in terms that go well. It’s even more frustrating when you don’t get to do all the things you want to do because something that was brewing before your Presidency decided to dump itself on your term. Daniel handled having this dumped on his plate very well. He also did a very good job in providing just the right amount of oversight to the project to ensure that it would succeed, and he was brave enough to take responsibility for ensuring it would succeed this term. Thank you Daniel!
A little bit later today I’ll be writing some more about what the future development plans are, since I’ve hinted at them a bit while talking to you all about issues you’re reporting, but I haven’t actually laid it out anywhere in a public for a while. So, expect that post soon.
Joe
Just for the record … I’d like to mention that I am certain that Dan was also the president at the time of the changeover from Webbspace to Drupal. From memory, Sarah Hemenway and Dan were voted in as Pres and Veep respectively in the lead up to the January when Drupal STF began. Sarah began struggling big time in posting and eventually resigned, meaning Dan was pushed into the Presidency. I believe Jack Dipper may have stepped in as his VeeP.
Also, thanks Joe and the rest of TECH for the hours you all put into the programming.
