A tribble walks into a bar on the back of a munchkin cat…

Wait wait wait, wrong post. Ahem.

I mentioned in an earlier edict this term that Russell Watt is one of two members of STF who is synonymous with Oed V for me. While he couldn’t put the time and the energy into it recently, he has always been a lynch pin in the colony’s success. Moreover, he has volunteered his time consistently to help the club where he can, whether as Internet Director, STF Awards emcee, Fleet Commander, or Assistant Engineering Director. It’s been quite a while since the last time he was promoted and I’m honored to be able to remedy that as someone who met Russell on his very first day of STF and has become a better role-player as a result.

It is my pleasure to promote Russell Watt to the rank of Commodore.

Thank you for all of your work in the club, Russell. Congratulations on a promotion well-earned.

Oh wow, thank you so much Sarah, I am a very happy (and very surprised) Tribble and (as I said in Discord) I was also a speechless Tribble for a while today. But the speechlessness has passed.

I joined the club in my early-mid 30’s when I was studying to become a Teacher through one of the unis here. While I was in the computer lab one night ‘studying’ I typed in ‘star trek roleplaying’ on a whim, and checked out STF and a couple of others.

I think that STF was the only one I signed up for, I chose the Academy, because I had ‘no idea what I was doing’, I also chose not to have a mentor because ‘the tutors had better things to do with their time than deal with me … and besides I was sure I would fail’. Even up until the end of the mission when we graduated, I convinced myself that ‘there was no way I’d pass because I hadn’t done a good enough job’, but Brian (Olinski) named me the new Chief Engineer (and apparently I had done a good enough job). Then, I was told that I would be the new mentor of Engineering Cadets and I was like … but how? I can’t do that. Well, Gene Gibbs was my one successful graduate as an Engineering DH … and you know how he’s turned out. :) Gene took over as CE and I became CNS (John-King McKenzie and his nephew were the result)

I had been reading Oed V since early on in the Academy, and that was a place I wanted to join (even if Sy terrified me in those days) - the bunny ears you know, and he has a savage bite. Once I graduated, I nervously wrote to Sy and asked him if I could join … I had worked out a character and multiple posts … and he said his XO (Sarah Hemenway) reportedly advised him she would turn him into roast rabbit (or something to that effect) if I wasn’t allowed to join. So I joined, and Sy remained as a rabbit. In time, I got my first CO Position (Long Live the Draco!) and dipped my toe into Command and Cabinet. In time, Sy stepped down and I was fortunate enough to be named his successor in an edict in which Dan also promoted me to Fleet Captain. Over the time since then I’ve come and gone a few times (as life and situations waxed and waned), and had RPing positions throughout the club and across the Fleets.

I had been a fan of Star Trek since the first run of TNG on our tv in country QLD in the late 80’s/early 90’s. In them days, it was on Monday nights, 11pm-12pm and you had to wait a whole week to see the next episode and it was good that 90210 was on at a different time … because that was my sister’s show … and I know it would have led to more fights between us if they were on at the same time.

Once again, thank you Sarah for this very great honour and thanks Dave for your congratulations. Thanks also to those in Discord who have shared congratulations with me in there. I understand pizzas are on me, until the next promotion is announced!
