Adebowale Mbala

Dr. Adebowale Mbala, Ade for short, is the ship’s dentist. He works from a small treatment room off Sickbay. You couldn’t call the small treatment room an office or a surgery, as it was barely much larger than a cloakroom or broom cupboard. Space in USS Merrimack Sickbay was at a premium.

Ade offers a wide range of treatments for maintaining oral health, such as routine check-ups, cleanings, and fillings, as well as restorative services like crowns, bridges, and root canals. Other services include cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening and veneers, orthodontic care for straightening teeth, and surgical options like wisdom tooth removal and dental implants. For more urgent issues, emergency dental care was also available.

Long gone are the days when teeth were extracted by physically pulling them one at a time under crude anaesthetics, now he uses a specialist transporter-based device, which removes complete teeth and their roots with minimal pain, but do be careful to sit perfectly still in the chair.

Ade is adverse to all violence, almost a pacifist. He also smokes cigars to the annoyance of many of the rest of the crew. He is aware of the health risks but he enjoys it and calculates that risks from other life choices are much greater. He has a wicked sense of humour. He is a Poker and Blackjack player and his third arm comes in handy when playing cards. He’s not addicted to gambling or anything else, well, probably to Nicotine… however, he’s clearly not very good at gambling.

Ade doesn’t take put downs disguised as jokes very well. If he did have any faults, then that was certainly one he would subscribe to.

Ade can dance a little East Coast Swing, or sometimes a Waltz, once in a while.

These days, he doesn’t get much work, except for that one time we found the parasitic calcareous aliens.

New technology and ways of working mean that the profession of dentistry is practically finished. Ade feels that he’s just another employee thrown upon on the scrapheap of Progress! However, he believes there’ll be a big queue at his office when the machines go offline!
