Physical Description:
Vincent looks slightly more rugged than one would expect a Star Fleet officer to be. He stands a touch over six feet, a lanky build made sturdy by regular excersize. His vulpine red hair is closely shaved, and he wears a thick but well-kept beard. His face is marred by slight scars and stress-induced wrinkles, with large bags under his eyes, making him look almost ten years older than he actually is. His posture is that of a soldier, though his eyes hunt around a room as if always searching for something. Tattoos in the Orion language crawl up and down his neck, and in fact cover his entire body. Upon being offered to have the tattoos removed, he denied, stating that he’d prefer to remember.

Backstory:
Vincent’s parents were both born in space to parents who were Star Fleet officers themselves. Yolande Zay and Robert Boss met while studying at the Star Fleet Academy on Earth, and quickly became friends. The two were skilled in the sciences behind space flight, and upon graduation were assigned to the Dunsinane Research Station. It was here that they fell in love and eventually married.

Vincent was the second of three children. His early childhood on Dunsinane Station was fairly uneventful. The station’s inhabitants were mostly human, mostly coming from francophone cultures. With his mother’s Belgian heritage and his father’s parents hailing from Cajun stock, Vincent’s home life was abundant with stories and language and food. Whereas his older sister became obsessed with scientific discover and his little sister found a calling in conquering physical challenges, Vincent discovered an early interest in linguistics and cultures.

Over time, Robert and Yolande Boss’s talents were recognized and they transferred with their family first to the USS Surprise, and then to the USS Agincourt; his father finally achieving Chief Engineer, and his mother promoted from the Helm to First Officer. His parents’ assignments would take the family all across the galaxy in all directions, and his adolescence and teen years were filled with strange new places and peoples. Then, the unthinkable happened. In 2386, while on mission, Vincent’s father died in a mechanical explosion. The event hit the family hard, most of all Vincent who began acting out. Still, his love of the Star Fleet way of life led him to apply to Star Fleet Academy in 2389.

Vincent studied at the campus on Kalo III, a world of black volcanic sand, heavy rain and fog, and gargantuan tides. His focus was in xenolinguistics and communications, though he always showed remarkable skill in his combat and self-defense extracurriculars. Despite his aptitude, he was frequently the subject of his superiors’ frustration. The words “rake”, “raconteur”, and “casanova” were frequent descriptors. Anyone who was asked would say he could easily be fast-tracked up the chain of command, if not for his frequent laziness and insubordination.

Despite an extra year at Academy, Vincent graduated with flying colors, and his superiors hoped to instill some early discipline in him by putting him on the listening post Roanoke Station. He was originally an Operations Officer, assisting with relaying covert Federation communications and even winning an accolade or two in dealing with security threats. To his superiors’ continued chagrin, his reputation for libertine shenanigans continued and he was often the subject of interpersonal disputes among staff. This all changed in 2396.

Three years into his assignment on Roanoke Station, the listening post was attacked by Orion Pirates. It was a senseless, bloody conflict, in which all survivors were taken into slavery. It is at this point that En. Vincent Boss is designated “MIA” and on paper, to public knowledge, it remains that way to this day.

This is what really happened.

Vincent found himself enslaved in a dilithium mine in an obscure asteroid belt. Other Star Fleet personnel were among his fellow captives, but most of the other prisoners were either Orions, or Romulan or Reman refugees. The first few weeks were torture, but over time Vincent learned how to survive in the deadly environment. Eventually his masters discovered his ability to withstand the violence of his surroundings, they placed him into the fighting pits. When he impressed them even there, and they discovered his talent for language, he became something of a valet and translator.

After a little under three years in slavery, Vincent came into contact with an undercover spy of the Federation. It was discovered that he had actually come into contact with an artifact the ARU was looking for in the asteroid belt. Through the combined effort of an already in-progress slave revolt and a Federation assault, Vincent was rescued from his captors. The man they brought back would be unrecognizable to those who knew him before. Gone was the boyish, clean-shaven, charismatic flirt, and in his place was a hollowed-out veteran of cruelty.

After a thorough psych-eval and counseling, and a relentless debrief on the artifact the ARU had been pursuing, Vincent was put through the arduous task of getting clearance before receiving special training as a Security Officer for the ARU. In 2401, he was assigned to the USS Leviathan.
