Personality: A scarecrow on fire could describe Charly’s personality as much as her looks. She is quick to emotion and hard to temper. Her anger can fade as quickly as it came, and she forgives as easily as a cat chases mice. As hot-and-cold as she can be, Charly is at heart a kind and caring person. She loves people and spends a lot of time hanging out in public or shared spaces. She will strike up a conversation with anyone, and there are few people she can’t find some common ground with. Background
Ages 0 – 10
Amelia and James met when Amelia was eighteen and James was twenty-one. Over the course of several months, they fell in love. A year later, Amy became pregnant with her first child, a boy. They married, and when the boy was born, he was named Adan. It wasn’t until five years later that Amy had another child, a girl. Her name was Charmaine, and she was born with congenital Cytomegalovirus (CMV). Because of the virus, Charly developed profound hearing loss in the first year of life. After Charly was diagnosed, Jamie chose to get a vasectomy to make future conception of children impossible, in order to devote all their resources to the two they already had. When it was discovered that Charly was deaf, her family learned ASL and taught her to speak in ASL. At five years old, when Charly started school, her parents sent her to a private school for the deaf, Rochester School for the Deaf. As a result, Charly grew up culturally Deaf, which her family supported. In her free time, Charly loved to draw and practiced drawing all the time. Her parents signed her up for extracurriculars starting at age seven. She first tried Dance, which she stayed in for two years, but switched to gymnastics, and remained in gymnastics until her junior year.

Ages 11 – 20
Charly continued to attend Rochester School for the Deaf, where she had many friends, though she was known for having quite a few instances of minor trouble with the rules. When she was in sixth grade, she decided she wanted to pursue medicine like her mother. She went from a B student to an A+ student and continued to keep good grades for the rest of school. When she was thirteen, she began volunteering at an animal shelter. At fifteen, she switched to volunteering at a homeless shelter in the city. When she graduated at eighteen, she was on the student council and was at the top of her class.
When she was fourteen, Charly chose to get bilateral cochlear implants in order to help her be successful in medicine. She received some backlash from the other students at her school for her choice, however, she stuck with it and learned to speak English. She used it often from ages fourteen to twenty-one, though she prefers to keep them off when she doesn’t need them.
In gymnastics, Charly has earned first place three years, second place four, and didn’t compete during the remaining three years, but remained in the sport for fun. She participated in the swim team, though she frequently received third place. She also did debate and speech.

Ages 21 – Present
After graduating from Rochester School for the Deaf, Charly entered Gallaudet University’s Pre-Medicine program. She majored in Biology with a GPA of 3.98. During her college years, she studied alongside many of her friends from Rochester, most notably, Gabriella “Gabby” Varley and Marlene “Marley” Jones, her two best and lifelong friends. Gabby is hard of hearing and Marley is Deaf like Charly. Gabby studied Exoanthropology (the study of alien culture and people) and Marley studied Engineering. Though they all went into vastly different fields, they studied together all the time.
After their undergrad programs, Charly and her friends all attended graduate school in their respective fields. For Charly, that meant going to Starfleet. She entered Starfleet Academy’s medical program. Having grown up culturally Deaf, Charly wasn’t used to living in the hearing world 24/7, and her first year at academy was a big adjustment for her. She hadn’t used her cochlear implants regularly since high school, though now, she had to have them adjusted and become re accustomed to them so she could use them all the time again, a requirement for entering Starfleet. After her first year, she started to do much better. She still tries to work on her speech, which still sounds kind of slurred.
She graduated Starfleet Medical with top grades and was assigned to the USS Columbus. She still keeps in contact with her friends and family.

Misc. Notes
Medical History
2364: congenital Cytomegalovirus (CMV) left Charly profoundly deaf. She was diagnosed and treated, but her deafness was irreversible. She can only hear very low pitches.
2375: Charly had a bad case of the flu that resulted in pneumonia. Recovered in three weeks.
2378: Cochlear implants were surgically implanted bilaterally to give Charly hearing.
