Julia (Jules) Chen

Jules was born in Hong Kong and her family moved to Reykjavík when she was twelve. Her father teaches at the World Chess Academy. Her mother creates historical romance and espionage holonovels (20th century). She has an older sister, Jennifer, who is a Deputy Minister for Education on Risa. She runs chess education for the planet. Judith, her younger sister, who is training for the UFP Candidates’ Chess tournament early next year.

Julia is tall and slender with long, mostly straight dark hair. Her eyes are brown and set into high cheekbones. She is still a strong swimmer and works out in the water whenever she can.

Jules played chess very competitively growing up but never quite measured up to her sisters. In high school she decided to focus on other things. She began swimming competitively in high school and continued the Academy. She became interested in holodesign, AI of competitive and non-competitive games, the cataloging, retrieval and thematic synthesis of non-textual data. Her father was (and still is) rather disappointed in her joining Starfleet. Her mother how ever is interested and supportive.

Jules did not excel academically at the academy but she impressed a few of her professors with a creative approach to systems design. She received permission to start working remotely toward a master’s degree in information science at the University of Texas in her senior year after which she spent 6 months in Austin completing. As part of the deal Starfleet require she study bioinformatics in preparation for assignment to the USS Ogawa.
