Saburo Kusanagi

Personality: Sometimes blunt to a fault, Saburo’s cool attitude can be off-putting and sometimes interpreted as rude, such as telling people to “spare him the bullshit”, having come across many liars in his time as a doctor about how they got a condition, often from some illegal activity. He can be demanding when he needs something and he uses profanity when highly agitated. He is also not afraid to examine corpses for clues, showing bravery and courage, and perhaps hinting he is desensitized and has seen some morbid things before. He is also impatient and does not like it when people are not careful. Saburo seems to possess an inquisitive and curious side - he is someone who wants to learn more about the world and everything around him. He frequently dishes out questions and has a will to find the truth. Saburo also expresses some disdain for social media, saying he became sick of the urge to constantly check online feeds, and how many people try to document every waking moment of their life online, or try to make it seem like they have “perfect” lives, when really they are as scared and as concerned as everyone else. A competent doctor, he tries his best for each patient although he will sometimes complain to his cat Izanagi about the more difficult or rude ones. He seems to almost always have an uncomfortable, scared, nervous, anxious or worried expression - it is unknown if this comes naturally, or if it is the result of having the stress and trauma he is dealing with due to his ex-husband.

Biography: Born in his parent’s hometown of Sapporo, Saburo is the youngest of 3 brothers. His eldest brother Shoichi is the Security Chief on the USS Livingstone, whilst his second oldest brother Jin is an author and is the only one of his family not to enter Starfleet. Saburo joined up, being inspired by tales of space and wanting to escape Earth. A quiet and reserved man, he decided to become a medic as he didn’t want to fight or kill but was determined to preserve life after losing his mother at age 13 due to a heart attack from a hereditary condition that was cured by the time Shoichi was born. Looking up to his eldest brother and respecting Jin’s decision, he soon found himself in San Francisco and began training. It was at this time he met Robert, who at first was sweet and kind until they got married, when Robert’s true colours manifested as he began to physically abuse Saburo, laughing as he punched and kicked him. Due to his reserved nature, he was afraid to reach out for help despite Robert’s threats to kill him. Taking the first deep space mission he could find, he started divorce proceedings and tries his best to ignore the abusive messages he gets. Still recovering, he got a restraining order on Robert but is finding difficulty in forming relationships after being under his coercive control for so long, scared he’ll just be hurt again. Using the emotional pain, he doesn’t just distance himself from his patients but everybody.
