Mason fell in beside him and matched his pace though it was evident that he was relying on Paron to guide him to where he needed to be. “Have you been to one of our facilities before, Lt? They are quite an operation.” As they moved about the corridors, he commented. “I’ve never been on this class of ship before. It is well kept up. I hear that this is an Academy or training vessel. Does it typically do these kinds of missions? I mean, shuttling about people like me must not be terribly exciting as a training ship.”

“I can’t say I have, Mr. Larden. I have heard a little. It’s a good ship, and we want to show the cadets the good, the bad and the ugly. When a mission is not exciting, then they get a taste of what it is really like on the fleet on a day to day basis,” Paron responded, leading the way. “But it is always good to be alert,” he said with a smile

Larden pondered this. “Much of the company’s training is done through holo-style virtual reality after tours of facilities. Certainly the duration is not nearly as stringent as say your Academy, though MagCor has striven to have a greater holo training footprint. It cuts down on work related training injuries for the most part. But we have a similar apprenticeship period on a station.” He mused as they turned a bend. “I suppose that it’s really not that different. But the Plouton Mines do not have apprenticeships.”

“That’s fair enough, but we like to give the cadets some on-the-job training experience before they leave the academy. That way, they feel that bit more ready when they do graduate. Still takes some getting used to being an officer, but there’s a certain familiarity with day to day ship operation that comes with it, the exciting, and the boring,” Paron replies with a smile as they turn another bend and reach the turbolift, gesturing for Mason to enter, and following in behind him.

Mason entered. He came to a stop and turned though did not lean against the lift wall like many do. Clasping his case in front of him in both hands by the handle he looked thoughtfully at the doors as they closed. “An officer. What is the difference between an officer and one not commissioned? Greater technical training? Not everyone can be an officer, of course. In a corporate arena a position is given through qualification. What separates the, and forgive the figure of speech, men from the boys in your case?”
