Buckingham smiled as the Cadet spoke. The memories of once being so new and Green arose in his mind for a brief moment.
“They truly are a wonderful piece of technology” Tom said “They’re often taken for granted, but without them things would be much more complicated.” Tom paused a moment to organise his things before he continued.
“Now then” He continued “Before we proceed with your medical, have you any aliments or conditions you wish to raise with me now that aren’t expressed on your medical history?” Tom asked as he began to pull up Cadet Kingstone’s Medical History up on the PADD.

“I guess that in my medical history there’s everything.” said Kai, smiling. “I felt just a bit weird when I used the transporter. It was my first time. It was like a confusion state that I experienced for a couple of seconds.” added.

“I’m sure that as you use the Transporter more frequently, you’ll become more accustomed to the sensation.” Tom said to reassure the Cadet.

As the doctor was looking his medical history on his PaDD, Kai used the moment to keep looking around and saw that most of the biobeds were in use. The screening of the LCARS display showed that the patients conditions were stable, and somehow made Kai feeling more secure.
“It’s always busy here, doc?” asked the cadet.

As Kingstone was talking Tom removed the Medical Tricorder from his labcoat pocket and began scanning

OCC:

[Mental and physical health conditions are optimal. Levels of adrenaline are slightly higher than normal. Serotonin and dopamine are slightly lower: probable excitement and a bitter sadness feeling.]

IC:

“Like most departments, I find it Ebbs and Flows, but just lately it has been rather busy.” Tom said Earnestly.

“Why you’ve been busy lately?” Asked courteously to the Doc while he was scanning Kai’s body in search of anomalies.
“Something bad happened?” Tilted the head on a side.
Oliver was feeling a bit uncomfortable with the tricorder and the scanner around him. But it was an issue that he had to live with.
The vibrant sound of the scanner remembered him the first time he was onboard a ship: he always heard that sound, maybe because his quarters were near a MedBay; maybe it was just a recurring noise.

Buckingham stared at the Tricorder as the results of the Scan poured in. Though Kai’s level of Serotonin and dopamine was no cause for immediate concern, the levels were intriguing. But he would address that shortly.

Satisfied that everything was quite well with Cadet Kai, Tom closed the Tricorder and placed it back into his Lab Coat Pocket.

To answer the Cadet’s Question, Tom began: “Well, we have had quite a few new crew members joining, so we have had a few medicals to do. Also the ship has been assigned to a couple of missions which have required medical input. And of course there is the ‘normality’ of ships life, and the minor injuries that sometimes come with it.”
Buckingham answered. “It’s all pretty routine really, but I do quite enjoy being busy.”

“Now then” Buckingham said, addressing the levels of Serotonin and dopamine. “I’m quite satisfied that everything is alright with you physicaly. But, personally are you feeling well? Don’t feel like you have to answer that question, but I’d just like to make sure that everything is O.K. before I clear you for Duty.”

Buckingham certainly wasn’t a counselor, non did he intend on trying to be one. But he was a personable fellow and hopefully he would be able to make the Cadet feel a little more at ease, or refer him to someone who was better equipped to help him. However, Buckingham didn’t intend on delving too far, being mindful that the Cadet would also be checking in with the Counselor anyway.

“Nothing can be hidden by the tricorder, hm?” Sighted in a melancholic way.
“The fact is…” raised both hands and shrugged “is that I am regretting a bit to haven’t said anything to my parents when I was about to leave for the Academy.” Looked down on the bed.
“My father and my mother were Starfleet Officers. At the idea to follow their way, they were contrary. But In the end I’m here.”
Kai would take and hold the cross necklace he had on the neck: it was a gift from his mother, who was catholic.
He never believed in any religion, but the cross was such a joint between him and his family, on the Earth.
“I sometimes believe I did the wrong choice joining Starfleet. But then, the last words I heard from my father were: glory and mercy. And maybe were those two words to convince myself to go. It will pass Doc, nothing serious.” Affirmed.
For Kai, the Doc was kinda a friend, even if he was new and never met Mr. Buckingham before. That’s why he spoke without any problem, beside his usual behavior to try to avoid open questions of personal matter.

As Cadet Kingstone spoke Buckingham perched himself on the edge of the Biobed that was next to the one Kingstone was on. He faced Cadet Kingstone and listened intently. Buckingham was always very grateful and attentive when people spoke to him about personal matters, because in sharing this sort of information, there is a great deal of trust involved. Buckingham was always humbled by this trust and careful to never abuse it.

“Cadet,” Tom spoke earnestly, yet warmly “As people, we are forever moving forward. Thusly, what has been done in the past is done and there is no changing it… However, the past does not matter, only the present moment matters. ” Tom paused a moment before continuing. “So don’t let the past anchor you down. Move forwards. Your parents are only a subspace call away. It is well within your power to call them and talk openly to them, share what you are thinking and feeling and most importantly make things right - you have control of this situation” Tom lent across and patted Kingstone on the shoulder. “But whatever decision you do make…” Tom continued. “ensure it is one that you won’t regret. Because heartbreakingly, these people don’t stay in our lives forever.”

“These people don’t stay in our lives forever.” This phrase started bouncing in the cadet mind repeatedly and repeatedly. Kai always wanted to stay beside his mother because he knew that she had recently discovered to have a terminal disease.. thinking about her, he remembered the night before the departure of the shuttle to reach the Academy: Kai was called by his old mom, Miss Jane, and at the news of her illness, he was struggling hard, whether abandon or remain with her.
But the mother, who was wise and beautiful, told Kai: “There’s a future out there awaiting to be just discovered. So don’t waste your time son.”
A little tear was going down Oliver’s left eye on his cheek, but immediately he wiped the tear and said:
“You know? thanks Doc. I’ll send a message for my parents and tell them how much I love them. It will surely help me.”
Kai was clearly a bit upset and sad, but beside the emotional moment, the education imparted by his father, made him still a valuable resource on a starship as he would keep working clearing his mind by any bad thought.
“There’s still something else to do, Doc?” Asked Kai smiling a bit

Tom smiled at the Cadet. Tom hoped he hadn’t done more harm than good. He was unsure whether he had really helped or not, but at least he had tried. Having experienced devastating loss of someone he was close to in his own life, Tom could quite easily relate to what this young man was going through.

“No, that’s it Cadet. You’re clear for Duty. I’ll update your Medical History accordingly.” Tom paused a moment and just before the Cadet left, he stopped him.

After hearing that everything was right and no issues were found, Kai thanked the Doc and got off the biobed, heading directly to the door. But was immediately stopped by him for a moment.
“What now… he found something about my health at the last?” Thought concerned.

“Cadet, please don’t be afraid to speak out if you need help or even just a friendly ear. My office is always open, and we have a truly wonderful Counselor aboard.” Tom smiled as he attempted to reassure the Cadet.

Receiving some attention and comfort, made Kingstone keen on the CMO and found his friendly behavior kinda nice.
“I’ll come and talk with you or to the counselor if I ever needed something to talk about, doc.” Smiled. Kai lent his hand to shake his Doc’s hand, and again, happy to have nothing wrong in him, headed out the MedBay. It was time for a little meeting with his new HD, the least desirable of his main duties (for now) as he knew he was a Vulcan.
