“I’d hope so, otherwise we’d all be in trouble,” Liadra said with a laugh. “How about you? How do you feel you fit into the mild chaos of so many new people?” The Denobulan’s gaze was attentive but not intense and she seemed genuinely interested in what the commander might have to say.

“I’ve always sort of had the patience for teaching others,” Keena explained, “It was less pronounced before being joined with the Vahl symbiont, I’ve noticed an even greater patience since the joining. The previous hosts were all scientists and educators, I was the first security officer in the mix. I think that helps me adapt to the many changes around me and take them with a bit of grace.”

“Tell me about Vahl and where you mesh well and where you sometimes clash? Or does it work that way even?” Liadra asked with curiosity. While she had met joined trills before and studied some of the anatomy and psychology, it was an entirely different thing to work with one who was joined.

“We don’t clash, that would probably create problems during the joining process,” Keena explained, “I essentially gained all of Vahl’s memories and skills when I was joined. I was a bit of a surprise selection for the council, but I think the idea was that Vahl had educators and scientists before, perhaps a security officer would provide a unique perspective. Meerin, Vahl’s previous host before me had even stated near the end of her life that battle tactics were indeed a type of science. I find Vahl’s memories help me understand scientists and engineers, which I struggled with slightly before I was joined.”

“And what about becoming an XO- was becoming a command officer something you had particularly aspired to doing?” Liadra asked. It was actually an interesting conversation since she had the opportunity to learn first hand about the things she’d need to know to support Keena in her work.

“Yes, I would say I’ve always had that particular aspiration in the back of my mind,” Keena replied honestly, “I was Captain of my rowing team in school, one of the debate leaders too for a time. I always seemed to find my way into leadership positions. I suppose you could say I figured out fairly early that I had an aptitude for not only figuring out what I needed to be doing, but what others around me needed to be doing.”
