Kanto’s fingers moved deftly over the navigation console, as he processed the sensor data and immediately made course corrections as if he was one with the ship. While the computer may not be 100% accurate all of the time, he believed he could compensate with his own intuition. After piloting the Vulcan science vessel Lakur with his father, this seemed to be close enough that his skills were useful. And the COS seemed more than confident that she could do her job, so Kanto was inclined to believe her…

Kate nodded crisply at Rixan and her fingers quickly moved over her own console to initiate the phasers at the appropriate moment. She kept a careful eye on the read outs, ready to report any results on her side to the CO.

Trent, COS

As they navigated away from the one, larger iceberg style asteroid it became evident that there were four others in its shadow. Each were smaller by a considerable margin, but easily equal to the size of the Endeavor.. Each were on a separate course slowly spreading out in the region. Given the complexity of the area where they were it becomes evident to Kanto very quickly that they would need to do something with at least one of them as that four were going to crowd them into a corner so to speak.

Kanto targeted the sensors towards the four smaller asteroids, determined to discover which one would be the best one for the COS to use for target practice, giving them a clear path. He double and triple checked the life sign readings on the other sensor pattern as he did so.

“Ready when you are, Lieutenant (Cadet?),” Kate replied shortly, her fingers poised over the appropriate buttons on her console. She kept steady eye contact on the CSO, waiting for his information on where to target.

It might be noted, as well, that as the large ice-asteroid moved past them from their course control, that a mining ‘claim’ signal was detected on it. Such signals were the modern equivalent of a prospector staking a claim. Indeed, as it passed, there was a small personal sized shuttle anchored to it with one life sign reading within and another on an EVA on the surface of it.

“Computer,” he called out to the air, “There is movement on the larger asteroid we just passed. Is the humanoid in any immediate danger?”

=^= Current computer plots designate risk to that asteroid and inhabitant at 18%. Changes to the select asteroids may increase or decrease that risk by 9%. Warning Life Support on one of the target vessels has ceased. Life signs still detected. =^=

The patterns ebbed and flowed. What projections did show was that the closer they allowed one or more of the asteroids to approach increased the risk to collateral damage to the ship.

Kanto listened to the computer, then made some quick calculations in his head. He looked to Kate and asked, “I am unsure which asteroid would be the best to target, Lt. Trent. I will leave the tactical assessment of which asteroid to hit in your capable hands.” After all, she did outrank him, and scientifically the risk was about the same for each asteroid.

OOC: Passing the buck eh? <G>

Kate nodded briefly at the science officer. It actually impressed her slightly that he was willing to defer to her expertise instead of making a guess himself. She didn’t expect such forethought from someone who had so recently been a cadet. Her fingers tapped over the console as she selected the asteroid that was the easiest to fire against. Her decision tree wasn’t complex – the best chance of a win came from actually hitting the darn thing.

“Ready to fire, Captain,” she confirmed once she had gotten everything situated.

Trent

As Kate said ‘ready to fire’, her finger that was at the firing position gave a minute spasm and the firing program initiated. Phaser fire lanced out at the targeted asteroid. Being a mix of ice and gas and some rock the result was more explosive than anticipated. One third of it simply vaporized. The remaining two thirds careened off in various directions. One piece struck one of the neighboring potential trouble asteroids, sending it off in a new vector that ‘may’ clip the edge of the asteroid that the nearby prospectors were on (not the imperiled two ships). The other pieces blew outward in an impressive visual display.
