“I grew up on Vulcan, my mother is half Vulcan half human while my father human. He was in Starfleet and died when I was very young at the battle of Wolf 359. Despite being more human than Vulcan, all I have ever really known is Vulcan life, and their expectations. So… I tried to blend in, but I have always been too emotional for most Vuclans. Which I do find some irony in, as most humans find me too Vulcan at times.” Cain said as he raised his eyebrow, letting that thought sink in it never escaped his attention that he always felt apart from both worlds.

Liadra leaned in conspiratorially and winked. “I’m not Human, so I don’t find you as anything but you.” She wasn’t going to dwell on any of the details he told her unless they didn’t seem like anything he hadn’t already dealt with and it might impact his work. “To be fair, Denobulans challenged many preconceptions for some of the different species we’ve met over the years, so we’re practiced at navigating those situations.”

“When I was finally old enough to make my own choices, Starfleet seemed the best. It had people from all walks of life, it didn’t matter what I was. Now I admit it hasn’t been perfect, but I find myself more at peace in mixed locations.

She nodded. “It’s always a process, no matter who you are, isn’t it?”

“It can be yes.” Cain said, with a very small smile as he nodded at her.

“And now you’re here to impart your expertise on the next generations. How do you plan on doing that very important job?” Liadra.

“Honestly, I don’t know. I think trying to show the pitfalls I found my time in and trying to help them learn from my mistakes. Granted some mistakes you really just need to learn on your own.” Cain said, as he thought on her question.

She nodded. “Are there mistakes you regret, or would go back and change, if you could?” Liadra asked lightly. While she was going to keep the conversation light in tone, it didn’t mean she couldn’t ask deeper questions. In fact, she liked operating in contrasts and found it created interesting responses from people.

“Regretting mistakes… are a luxury for people with too much time on their hands. I haven’t had much time to think on my past, or what could have been. You move forward, and see where you land. It’s not very logical to dwell on what you can’t change.” Cain said, the last statement sounding very Vulcan like.
