“T’Lyr is efficient. We have corresponded several times over the past few years, and she informed me that my father continues his work without interruption.” He arched an eyebrow. “Fascinating. As a counselor, you are doing an exemplary job. I ended up volunteering personal information without you having to say much.” Looking uncomfortable, for a Vulcan, Kanto shifted again, almost imperceptibly.

“What do you believe my job to be, Kanto?” Liadra asked seriously, though her tone wasn’t overly heavy. She wasn’t upset, not in the least! Instead, she felt it important that they establish the parameters for this conversation for optimal understanding. That and he was partly right. She did look for additional information, but she didn’t go out of her way to obtain it unless the situation somehow required it.

Kanto thought over his response before answering. “I do not presume to know every detail about your job, counselor, but I believe it requires exemplary listening skills, as you are responsible for ensuring that the members of this crew are mentally fit to do their jobs.” He paused, hoping he had not overstepped his boundaries as a cadet.

The Denobulan nodded. “Yes, that is an aspect of my job. I indeed have to evaluate the mental fitness of anyone who chooses to serve, but I’ve always believed it’s much more than that.” She leaned forward slightly, her body language intentionally becoming more engaged with him. “Most people enter here with certain preconceptions about how this will play out. They often believe that I will dig into their past, their childhoods, that I will present as a possibly confrontational obstacle to them starting their duties. They see me as something to”-she did air quotes as she spoke the next three words-“take care of, because then they will have yet another test, juped through yet another required hoop.”

She smiled widely, her flexible mouth and jaw muscles making the grin that much wider than that of other species. “But what if I told you that there is not test, Kanto?”

Kanto regarded her with a new appreciation. “I misjudged you, lieutenant, and I apologize. Throughout my time in the Academy leading to this cruise, and I suppose even before it to some degree, I have learned that there is always someone to ‘test’ me. Other cadets who tried to tear through my ‘stoic nature’, as they called it, and try to provoke some emotional response. My father has always tested my limits, and T’Lyr has tested my resolve. I am appreciative that you have not. Thank you.”

“If you do not mind my asking a question,” he continued, “Is my evaluation acceptable?”
