The Denobulan woman had a curious shade of pale pink to her hair normally light brown hair, which was pulled over one shoulder and secured with an oval-shaped glossy black clip. Looking up at the door, her grey eyes held warmth as she smiled. “Well, Cadet Kanto, do come on in and join me and we can get to know one another a bit better,” she said, gesturing to the sofa and setting the PADD she had been reading on a side table.

“Tell me about your studies and what is the most intriguing thing you have learned so far,” Liadra said, intentionally setting the tone for their conversation.

Kanto walked over to the sofa and sat down. He looked fairly uncomfortable, as if he was walking into a Targ den. He sat with his back straight and placed his hands on his legs, just above his knees. “I graduated with honors from the Vulcan Science Academy,” he started, not wanting to engage in small talk, lest he give up the conflict within himself. “After that, I spent years working under my father, Krynvok, studying the region known as the Briar Patch. We mapped countless anomalies and studied several discrepancies within that region. As you probably know, the Briar Patch keeps growing at a steady rate of 0.3209 km per stellar year, so it was a mission that would last at least a century or more. The most important thing I learned was a personal one. I felt like I was not achieving my potential as a scientist, so I joined Starfleet.”

She tilted her head slightly as she regarded him. “How so? What was he appeal?” Liadra asked simply. His body language told her a great deal, which was unexpected, but no cue was too small to help her gain insight into the person in front of her.

Kanto shifted ever so slightly, before he answered her question. “My father and I had a different understanding of what being a productive member of Vulcan society was about. He felt that we were doing important work in the Briar Patch, but I did not think so. Starfleet does worthwhile things to better the whole of the universe, much more than mapping a few stellar phenomena in a barely traveled section of space. It was the logical decision for me to move on.”
