“Very well” Tom said, as he sat and came up with a question. “What made you want to be a counselor?” He asked. Though it was a bit of a generic question, he anticipated the answer would be a fairly interesting one because they Counselors always seem to be very interesting people, with a lot of depth to them.

“Well, my parents, meaning my biological parents of course, are both in the medical field and I grew up surrounded by science and medicine. In fact, I even started my pre-med studies, but it was the neurology and psychology classes I took that make me start to second-guess that decision. Then I did some electives in sociology and I realized my interests lay more in the behaviour of sentient beings, than in their strictly physical health.” She leaned in a bit. “Though to be fair, I truly believe in the link between mental and physical health, so the dividing line is fuzzy, at best.”

“Fascinating” Buckingham said as his raised his eyebrows with interest. “I have always had a great admiration for Counselors and people in that profession. It must be taxing and difficult work sometimes. But I imagine it is greatly rewarding work too.”

Liadra nodded. “It definitely can be. But like any health professional, it can take a lot out of you. Which is why counsellors are also required to see their own counsellors. Like many doctors, sometimes we are our own worst patients,” she said with a wink.

“What about you? How are you as a patient?” she asked.

“An infrequent one, thankfully!” Buckingham laughed. “But when I do have to be treated for something I try not to interfere, I just let the Doctor do what they need to do, and I just do as I’m told” He took another sip of his Coffee before continuing. “Although it is one of the strangest things to go from being the doctor to being the patient.”

“Agreed,” she said with a slightly comical grin. “I had to see a counsellor outside of normal yearly evals on a couple of occasions after events on my ships were rather dramatic. It’s harder for health professionals like us because we know the drill. It’s hard to take off that practitioner’s hat enough to just be a patient.”

Liadra leaned back. “Any notable incidents so far?” she asked with curiosity.

“Personally, I’ve never been terribly ill or hurt.” Tom said. “But in regards of patients I’ve had quite a few major cases. But thankfully there hasn’t been anything that I couldn’t deal with.” He paused a moment, hoping that he didn’t sound big headed. “The majority of my Medical Profession has been spent in the field of Trauma and Emergency Medicine, which makes it slightly more difficult to come across anything that might be considered ‘minor’.
