Ang stepped into engineering and nodded with a smile to several folks in there. Moving to her office, which had a doorway but no door, and a huge picture window that looked into Engineering. She settled into her chair and pulled up the duty roster for the coming month. A smile lit her face as she saw the newest Cadet on the team.

She made sure her tunic was pulled straight and her hair wasn’t ridiculously messy as she started work on the rotations and down times chart for the next few weeks. With any luck at all, the young man would be on time this morning and be ready to work.

Joseph had been standing in Engineering when Ang walked in, looking over another cadet’s shoulder and at a diagnostics panel that showed the outline of the Endeavor. He swallowed when he saw Ang walk in, then pulled and straightened his grey cadet shirt. Surely meeting your new department head was stressful enough on it’s own, but a half Klingon? Even half Klingons weren’t known to be the most casual and easy going.

He took a deep breath before approaching the office doorway and hoped for the best. “Cadet Lovell, reporting for duty, ma’am.” he said, standing straighter than normal and crossing his hands behind his back.

Ang had noticed Lovell when she’d come in, but chosen to acknowledge him. As he entered her doorway, she managed to upturn her lips into a semblance of a smile. “Come on in, Cadet. Welcome to the family. Have a seat.”

The half Klingon would never look ‘soft and sensual’, at least to anyone looking conventional female softness, but her attempts at smiling at least didn’t make her seem menacing or unapproachable. She took a moment to glance at his record on her console again before addressing him. “So have you settled into your quarters yet? Finding your way around, ok?” While they seemed like odd questions, they were, in her mind, important ones. If the new folks were settled in, and relaxed in their surroundings, they worked and performed better.

Joseph settled into the chair opposite his new supervisor, nervously reciprocating her smile. He still wasn’t entirely sure how to act around Ang, but if she was going to be asking friendly questions then Joseph would be giving friendly answers.

“Yes, ma’am. I arrived on the shuttle yesterday, so I spent my spare time wandering around. It’s a nice ship, but I think it will take some getting used to.” he said, thinking back to his quarters at the academy. “The Academy quarters weren’t as nice, but they were on solid ground.” he finished, trailing off. Shipboard engineering hadn’t been Joseph’s first choice of assignment, and he was sure his records would reflect that. He would have preferred a planet side posting, and was still hoping to switch after he made Ensign.

And glanced at his record to be sure no major attitude or disciplinary issues were present. The rest, she preferred to learn from the crewmen, themselves. “You have a problem being in a ship, Cadet?” Her voice was pleasant and curls. Not at all accusatory or confrontational. “Will there be a problem?”

Whole she knew that few, if any, Cadets got their dream station right out the gate, she also knew that in space, she couldn’t afford to have someone who would be a liability.
