Riley sighed, leaning back. “I haven’t been on a holodeck that I have controlled in,” he paused, eyes looking to the ceiling. “Eight years,” he finished.

He lowered his head and didn’t speak for several long moments, staring at the floor. “I nearly did four years ago, writing my dissertation at Alpha Centauri.” His eyes never moved from the spot he was focused on. “It was … much more difficult than my first one, and I’m pretty sure my advisor actually hated me.” His eyes closed and he shook his head.

“I don’t need to be locked out completely,” he continued. “Just programming and control access.” He shrugged. “And if we can’t, we can’t. I’ll get by.”

OOC: So sorry for the delay in responding to this post! I’ve been getting settled into a new job and that’s been more time consuming than I anticipated. I’ve been loving this thread and your character is fascinating! I really appreiciate all the thought you’ve put into writing him.

OOC: Hey, no worries. I know the new job dance can be rough. Hope you’re settling in well! I’ve been enjoying being able to flesh out what was just an outline in my head, so thanks!

IC: Hilo nodded in understanding. “Alright, Mr. Riley. I’ll ask for the captain’s permission to disable your holodeck controls. But be warned, cadet… holodecks have unfortunately been known to malfunction, and if you are trapped inside one without access to control commands, that could be dangerous.

IC: Riley let out a breath he hadn’t realised he was holding and visible relaxed, tension easing from his body. “Thank you, Counselor,” he managed, without choking. “That was my plan, not to enter one without someone else present. Preferably lots of people.”

He sat back to consider the questions. “I’m… not the most outgoing person, but I get along with people pretty well. My previous supervising officer and I had a but of a personality conflict, but nothing too bad - you can probably read about it in my review. I enjoy working with people, actually. Different eyes, different ideas, work very well in the sciences.”

Hilo nodded in approval. “It certainly sounds like you have ample understanding of your strengths and areas for improvement. And an open mind is essential in Starfleet, so that’s good to hear. Have you met Lieutenant McMorran? Do you anticipate a personality conflict with her?” His question was posed neutrally, but his head tilted slightly to one side, as if considering what he thought the answer would be himself, now that he knew both the cadet and his department head.
