Kyle kept in quick step with Lieutenant Commander Hilo as the two officers made their way to Holodeck 2. Anders felt as if he was getting along with the Risian. He felt now would be the perfect time to get to know his Counselor:
“Commander, if I may, I’ve always wondered what made you choose an academy ship?”

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

Hilo flashed a wide smile to Anders as they arrived at holodeck two. “You say that as if it’s a questionable decision,” he teased good-naturedly. “I’ve always loved teaching. I was an instructor in San Francisco for a couple years before I came to the Challenger. Teaching in a lecture hall is of course extremely important, but maybe selfishly I wanted to be a little closer to the action and excitement that cadets experience on their academy cruises.”

Hilo strode through the doors to the holodeck and looked at Anders. “Besides, being on an academy ship lets me get to know the future officers of Starfleet even better. Like with opportunities to visit the holodeck together, for example. What did you have in mind?”

(Lt. Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

Kyle smiled and called out: “Computer, initiate program Anders Sigma-6.” The computer responded with a trill as the Holodeck space morphed around the two officers. Suddenly, what revealed itself to be a small bar area with a band playing in the far corner, materialised around them. There was a spare piano next to a young man who looked to be in his mid twenties playing a double bass. Anders swivelled and smiled broadly to the Risian with his arms outstretched: “Welcome Commander Hilo, to the Treble Clef Jazz Lounge.” A few of the holographic patrons turned from their seats in confusion, but then decided their drinks were more important.

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

OOC: Don’t mind me, forgetting to add words.

Hilo shot Anders a sly smile, an eyebrow raised slightly in amusement. “Lieutenant McMorran and Lieutenant Mika chose the wrong venue,” Hilo said as he headed into the lounge and slowed next to one of the center tables, a hand resting on the top of it in thought as he looked around. The he looked back at Anders. “Do you have any recommendations on what to order?”

(Lt. Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

Kyle gave a sly smile and called over to the bar: “Zee, your finest Aldebran Whiskey for my guest,” he leaned in towards the Risian, “Syntheholic of course.” As Anders pulled away, a female Bolian popped up from behind the bar with what appeared to a blue, glass vial. She whirled around in the direction of Anders and Hilo and flashed a mischevious smile:
“You’re in luck love,” the Bolian called Zee had a distinct cockney accent, “Got a new crate of the stuff in last week.” She disappeared into a store room and reappeared with what looked like a pair of champagne flutes. Glasses were poured and a human server took the drinks to the centre table. Kyle relaxed slightly into his seat and raised his glass, “Well Counselor, to new friends.”

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

Hilo nodded in thanks at the clarification that it was synthehol, his sly smile widening as he observed the character of the place. He raised his glass to mirror the cheers. “And new frontiers.” He took a sip before holding the glass in front of his face to inspect the liquid inside more closely. “Fine indeed,” he said in approval.

“This is an interesting venue,” Hilo continued with that same lightly amused tone, “how’d you find it?” He also settled back into his chair, looking around and tapping his foot lightly to the music.

(Lt. Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

Anders looked around at the room fondly, as if reminiscing. “My parents and I used to frequent this place when I was a lad; after we moved to New London when Dad joined the fleet. The two of them were devastated when they found out they would be loosing out on our regular visits, so Dad, who had become quite the accomplised holo-novelist in his spare time, worked with Zee to recreate the bar to take with us when we boarded the Yoshiko for the first time. Kyle shifted briefly in his seat as he realised he was going to have to relive the memories of his parents’ death once more, “After I lost my parents, during the Dominion War, I made sure to grab the program and keep it with me on every ship I served. I guess,” he paused briefly, “I guess it gives me something to remember them by.”

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

Hilo’s expression fell and he offered a soft “I’m sorry for your loss” before allowing a moment of silence. He shook his head lightly, eyes closed. “The war was so destructive in so many ways for so many people. I’m glad that this piece of your life was untouched and preserved as it always was. It feels almost impossible to escape the widespread impacts of the war and its toll on us as both individuals and as a civilization. It’s nice that you have this program to remind you what it was like before.” The counselor’s eyes gazed about the bar once more, a far-away look in his eyes. He had been a young man during the war himself, and although he hadn’t witnessed the tragedies of the conflict first-hand, he had heard many, many stories during his career as counselor from people who weren’t so lucky.

(Lt Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

The two officers sat in reflective silence for a moment before Kyle decided to move on to a more lighthearted subject, he glanced over at the band and tilted his head towards the Counselor, “Sir, how familiar are you with Earth’s jazz genre?” There was a slightly mischevious tone in Anders’ voice.

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

Hilo turned his head to peer at the band. “Tangentially,” he replied with hesitation. “Risian music tends to be a bit more… gentle. But what I have heard, I’ve enjoyed! This would be considered a ‘jazz bar’ right? Where that’s the main type of music they play?” Hilo sipped his drink again, peering over the rim at Anders expectantly. The counselor was of course well-versed in many cultures, but with so many different histories to keep track of, he had formed the habit of clarifying, rather than assuming he knew things correctly with confidence.

(Lt. Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

Kyle smirked and jerked his head over towards the now two empty seats, one at the piano, the other at the Double Bass and said: “Care to give it a bash?”

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

Hilo chuckled, maybe a little nervously. “I can play the Risian lyre, but I have a feeling that this instrument might be a little more advanced…” Despite his hesitation, Hilo rose and made his way to the double bass. He plucked the strings of the instrument gently, getting a feel for their resistance. “Hmm,” he mused. “This might take me a minute to figure out.”

(Lt. Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

Kyle appreciated the effort that the Counselor was taking, “Try this,” he said, taking his seat at the piano. Anders’ began to play a slow walking bass line, an early Jazz training piece from Earth’s 20th Century, “Follow my lead.”

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

Hilo was usually a confident person, but he had to admit that he was a little skeptical of his ability to keep up with an experienced jazz player like Anders seemed to be. Still, he took a couple seconds to find the right note and chord progression, then began to mimic the rhythm demonstrated by Anders. He plucked the strings much like he would a lyre, pleasantly surprised by the deep sound they made. “Well,” he said after a moment, “that seems doable enough!”

(Lt. Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

Kyle nodded to the other members of the band, who joined in at a slightly more traditional Jazz style pace. He smiled to Hilo, “We can take it steady, but you seem to be getting the hang of this!”

OOC: I can’t help but picture that scene from DS9 where Odo plays the piano while Vic Fontaine sings Come Fly With Me xD

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

OOC: Lol, a fitting visual! Also, I apologize for the delay with this thread. I started a new job last week and it’s kicking my butt. Also side-note: I as a RL plahyer know very little about jazz so please correct me if I’m wrong about something

IC: Hilo chuckled nervously and looked over his shoulder at the rest of the band, but nethertheless joined in with the others to the best of his ability. Given that he set the tempo, Hilo was a bit unsure of himself to start, but gradually got a feel for the song and started to get a little looser with his rhythms.

(Lt. Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

OOC: No worries at all, I’m not a jazz genius either, I’m training to be an actor myself (twice as fun when you’re wheelchair bound aha) I just didn’t want Kyle to be a direct copy of me lol

IC:
Kyle’s smile got wider as he watched the Counselor begin to get used to ‘jamming’, as most musicians called it. He was pleased, and surprised to notice that there was now a small crowd developing around the staging area.

-Cadet Kyle Anders: Security-

As much as Hilo loved to entertain, he also preferred to be entirely sure of himself while doing it. So the crowd made him smile nervously, and he faltered slightly for a couple beats, but quickly picked back up and con tinued, even more determined than before to figure it out as they went along. Eventually, the counselor found himself relaxing and letting the ‘jamming’ come more naturally. He looked over at Anders, offering a Eugene smile this time.
