Royal Sinclair (Counselor) in CNS Office - This May Be Awkward, TAG CoS : : : : : : : : : : Sinclair took a deep breath. Nothing in his training for this new job prepared him for this: a psychological assessment of the person he first knew as a Cadet, who now filled the role Sinclair had left only a few days before, and was now responsible for the safety and security of the ship and it’s crew… a job Sinclair had trained to do, and had done, for so long. The potential for Sinclair to be overprotective of his past role and the crew was definitely high, but Sinclair had confidence that Casen would perform admirably. Tapping his combadge, Sinclair’s Scottish brogue rolled out to the new Security Chief. =/\= Counselor to Security Chief. I know you are busy, but if you could please come to my office when you have a moment free. Thank you, Lieutenant. =/\= : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Lt. Cmdr. Sinclair, CNS : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Casen entered the office with a smile. “Hey, Sinclair. Oh, my mother wants to thank you for promoting me. Now, what do you need?” : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Lieutenant (j.g) Casen, CoS : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Sinclair smiled. “Tell her to thank the Captain. I just do as ordered.” The office was comfortable, with a desk in one corner and then a seating area opposite. A single chair faced away from the desk towards another chair and a long couch surrounding a short table on which sat a small bowl filled with multicolored stones. A low bookcase lined one wall, but sat mostly empty save for a few textbooks and such. The room was not lit as brightly or harshly as the hallway outside, but instead had a warm and welcoming lighting scheme. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : “You, Lieutenant Junior Grade, are due for a psychological evaluation with the ship’s Counselor. And that’s me. New duty assignment, new eval. That’s the regulation. So… please have a seat.” he said and indicated the seating area. “Want something to drink?” : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Lt. Cmdr. Sinclair, CNS : : : : : : : : : : : : : : “No thank you, sir.” He sat down obviously tired because of his day. “Try decorating an office with only a few items but still making it look good. It is hard. Ok. So let’s get done with the eval.” He laid back and smiled. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS : : : : : : : : : : : : Sinclair got a cup of hot tea for himself and came back and set it down on the table. He took up a PaDD from the desk and said. “Very well. For the record, this is a private session. Nothing you say here will leave this room. It is a confidential and safe location to speak freely. So please, feel free to answer honestly. You will not be judged nor condemned for anything you say here. With that being said…” and he looked down at the PaDD and then at Casen… : : : : : : : : : : : : “Tell me… how you are feeling since the away team mission?” : : : : : : : : : : : : Sinclair, CNS : : : : : : : : : : “Mad. At myself. For uh… you know. It’s hard dealing with the death of someone you didn’t know that also gave his life up for you. Now that I’m the Chief of Security, I’m gonna make sure that my officers don’t get caught off guard like I did that led to his sacrifice.” : : : : : : : : : : Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS : : : : : : : : Royal nodded his head. “Anger is understandable. And a completely normal reaction. But it is how we deal with that anger that defines how the moment will shape us. How do you think you are coping with the anger of the incident and the stress of your new position?” Sinclair asked. : : : : : : : : Sinclair, CNS : : : : : : “I’m surviving it. So far. Having such a huge family, I spend a lot of time answering messages from them. It comforts me. What you said has helped me.” His fingers tapped on the desk with a rhythm. : : : : : : Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS : : : : Sinclair made a note of the tapping and said “Is survival the most important aspect of your life, or do you have anything that drives you? For instance, what made you join Star Fleet?” he asked. : : : : Sinclair, CNS : : “No. Friends and family are. Survival is… I can’t explain it well. It’s not as important. I hope that I have children by the time I die. I joined Star Fleet because I felt I had to. I felt that I might be needed somewhere in the galaxy. There is something pulling me here. Where I need to be. I know it sounds like I’m crazy, but it feels right.” He said as he smirked. : : Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS “I know many members of Star Fleet that joined for very similar reasons. Why do you think that sounds ‘crazy’?” Sinclair, CNS

“I don’t know. If I told my family that they would call my crazy. Especially my brother. He always called me superstitious.” He chuckled. “I can’t believe I haven’t told them about Bills completely yet. They would freak out.”

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

“Why would they? Surely they know that Star Fleet can be dangerous…”

Sinclair, CNS

“They know that but, I would be told by them to leave Star Fleet because it’s’too dangerous’. My family is protective, Sinclair. They think that Star Fleet rarely ever does anything dangerous nowadays. Thankfully I’m the only one who likes history.”

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

Sinclair made another note. “How do you feel about your family not knowing the true nature of the risk you face?”

Sinclair, CNS

“I feel bad. They care about me and I lie to them. I don’t like lying. I feel guilty.”

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

“Casen, it would be a problem if you DIDN’T feel guilty. You have a conscience. That’s a good thing.” Sinclair said in support. “But guilt is the mind’s way of saying you may need to try something else. Have you considered talking to your family about what happened on the away team mission? And what happened to Bills? And what it is you do?”

Sinclair, CNS

“I have. I don’t know what would happen. One of my biggest fears, is not knowing about something. I’ll… I’ll tell them tomorrow. When I think of what to say. I’m not sure if you’re a good counselor or a bad one, because now you’ve persuaded me to have that drink, but you’ve made me want to drink.” He chuckled folding his arms.

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

Sinclair grinned. “Well, my goal is not to drive you to the bottle, lad.” and then he leaned forward. “But fear of the unknown is something that we have to deal with every day in this job. Might as well start trying to take charge of that fear now. And as far as your family goes, tell them what happened. Tell them how you feel. But make sure they know that you did a good job. So much so that you were promoted. You faced your fear with the snakes, and you came out the winner. Keep that thought with you while you talk to them. You should be proud of what you have accomplished. They should be, as well.”

Sinclair, CNS

“Joining Star Fleet was hard for me because I realized I would face the unknown. I believe the only way to stop my fear is to make the unknown,” he paused,”is to make it known. You can quote me if you need to. I would like that to be put on something with my name on it.” He walked over to the replicator and said, “Whiskey.” He got the bottle and sat down. “Anything else?”

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

Sinclair arched an eyebrow. “While I appreciate your comfort level, you do know this is an assessment exam, right?” he asked and cast a glance at the bottle. “Besides, the stuff that comes out of there isn’t whiskey. But maybe, once we are done, we could partake of some ireali stuff in the lounge.”
